The Louisiana IceGators are an American ice hockey team from Lafayette , Louisiana . The team has played in the Southern Professional Hockey League since 2009 .

history

The team was founded in 2009 as a franchise of the Southern Professional Hockey League . The Louisiana IceGators were named after a team of the same name that competed in the ECHL from 1995 to 2005 . In their premiere season, the new IceGators took seventh and last place in the SPHL in the 2009/10 season. This made them the only team that did not qualify for the playoffs. In the 56 games of the regular season they reached a total of 48 points. The team, which initially played its games in the Blackham Coliseum , has been playing in the Cajundome since the 2010/11 season , which is significantly larger with a capacity of over 12,000 spectators and in which the IceGators from the ECHL had already played. In addition, team founder Danny Smith sold the franchise to Chuck Anselmo Jr. and his son Chuck Anselmo III in August 2010.

Trainer

The first head coach of the Louisiana IceGators was the Canadian Ron Handy , who was able to gain experience in the National Hockey League as an active player with the New York Islanders and St. Louis Blues, among others . After three initial defeats, however, he already resigned his office and has been responsible for the public relations of the franchise ever since. In the further course of the first season of the IceGators were also Brent Sapergia , who was subsequently excluded from the league because of multiple unsporting behavior, John Gibson and from December 2009 Dave MacIsaac behind the gang. About a year later, Kevin Kaminski took over the job as head coach after he had been fired about two weeks earlier at the Mississippi RiverKings .
