Shawn McNeil (born March 17, 1978 in Pembroke , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who is currently active for the Herner EV from the major league .
Career
McNeil began his career in 1993 with the Kamloops Blazers , for which he played in the Canadian Junior League WHL until 1997 . Before the start of the 1996/97 season , the Washington Capitals took him from the NHL under contract, which had selected him in the third round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft in 78th position. However, the center did not complete an NHL game for the capitals and spent the following two seasons with the Red Deer Rebels in the same division, until he finally moved to Louisiana IceGators in the East Coast Hockey League in 1999 . In the same year McNeil was also appointed to the Canadian national team, for which he played two games.
After more than 270 games and 130 goals, the Canadian left Louisiana after four years and moved to Germany for EV Duisburg in the 2nd Bundesliga for the following 2003/04 season . After two years and 100 games played, the attacker rose to the German Ice Hockey League with the Foxes and played for the league the following year, which the team was able to achieve in the playdowns against the Kassel Huskies .
Despite the relegation of the "Huskies" to the second division , McNeil moved with his teammate Hugo Boisvert from Duisburg to Kassel and played with the North Hesse again two seasons for promotion to the DEL. With more than 120 scorer points in both years, Shawn McNeil was one of the best players at Kassel and dominated the second Bundesliga with them. Although they missed promotion in the final of the play-offs in 2006/07 , they managed this with a 27 point lead in the main round and a final victory against the Landshut Cannibals in the following year.
McNeil unexpectedly fell ill with rheumatism in the summer of 2008 and kept a training deficit in the DEL season 2008/09 , whereupon he moved to the Herner EV in the league in January 2009. The center retains the option to switch to Füchsen Duisburg for the 2009/10 season .
