The Kamloops Blazers are a professional Canadian ice hockey team from Kamloops , British Columbia that plays in the junior division of the Western Hockey League .

history

The franchise was founded in 1966 as Estevan Bruins in Estevan , Saskatchewan , and in 1971 the team moved to New Westminster , British Columbia , where it played as the New Westminster Bruins from then on . In 1981 the franchise was relocated again, this time to Kamloops, where it was initially named Junior Oilers . In 1984 the team was finally renamed "Kamloops Blazers". The team has been playing their home games at Riverside Coliseum, now the Sandman Center , since 1992, after having stood on the ice in the Kamloops Memorial Arena .

Today's Blazers are the WHL franchise with the most Memorial Cup wins; two as New Westminster Bruins, 1977 and 1978, and three championships since the club was relocated to Kamloops (1992, 1994 and 1995). The record in the entire Canadian Hockey League is still held by the Toronto Marlboros , who have won the title seven times.

Overall, the franchise also won the "President's Cup", the championship of the Western Hockey League, which was renamed the Ed Chynoweth Cup eleven times in 2007 , which is also a record. The team was champion of the WHL six times under its current name. In 1995, the Blazers played the final round of the Memorial Cup, for which they would have been qualified as winners of the 1995 President's Cup anyway.
