Geoff Arthur Smith (born March 7, 1969 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played for the Edmonton Oilers , Florida Panthers and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League from 1989 to 1999 .

Career

Geoff Smith was selected in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft in the third round as a 63rd player overall by the Edmonton Oilers . First, however, he played a year for the ice hockey team of the University of Dakota before he moved to the Kamloops Blazers from the Western Hockey League at the beginning of the 1988/89 season. In his rookie season , the 1989/90 season of the National Hockey League , Geoff Smith won the Stanley Cup on the first attempt with Edmonton . At the beginning of the 1993/94 season , the Oilers gave the defender to the Florida Panthers , with whom he stayed until 1997. Then the Canadian received a contract as a free agent with the New York Rangers . After moving to the St. Louis Blues in February 1999, he ended his active career in the service of the Worcester IceCats farm team in the summer of 1999.

From 2008 to 2011, Smith worked as an assistant coach with the Kamloops Blazers in the WHL.

International

For Canada , Geoff Smith took part in the 1989 World Junior Championship and the 1993 Men's World Championship .
