Career
Ken Daneyko began his career in 1980 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League , where he played for the Spokane Flyers , Seattle Breakers and Kamloops Junior Oilers . In the 1982 NHL Entry Draft he was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the first round at position 18. He did not go straight to the Devils, stayed in the WHL for another year, as well as parts of the 1983/84 season . That season he also made his debut in the National Hockey League and made eleven appearances.
In the 1984/85 season he played only once for the Devils and completed the season mainly in the American Hockey League with the Maine Mariners , the farm team of New Jersey. In the following season he was allowed to go on the ice for the Devils more often and in the fall of 1986 he had finally won a permanent place in the squad of the New Jersey Devils. In the 1987/88 season he helped that the team improved greatly in the NHL table and for the first time in eleven years again reached the playoffs . In fact, it was the first time since the team moved from Colorado to New Jersey in 1982. In the playoffs they then reached the conference finals. Daneyko was only absent from a few games and thus had a large part in the team's continued development and finally peaked in the 1994/95 season when they won the Stanley Cup for the first time in the history of the franchise .
He experienced one of his personal low points, however, three years later, when he missed most of the 1997/98 season because he had a drinking problem. General Manager Lou Lamoriello stood by him and sent him on a rehab program. Daneyko eventually returned to the team and won the Stanley Cup in 2000 . In addition, Ken Daneyko received the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy , which is awarded to the NHL player who shows perseverance, dedication and fairness in and around the sport of ice hockey.
After winning the Stanley Cup, he began his 18th season with the Devils and two more should follow. With the Stanley Cup win in 2003 , he finally retired as an active athlete from the NHL. The New Jersey Devils hung a banner in his honor on March 24, 2006 with his name and the number 3 on the ceiling of their ice rink, which means that the number is no longer given to any player. Ken Daneyko was one of the defensive specialists among the defenders who preferred the physically tough game. So he played 1283 games in the NHL, but could only score 178 points. However, there are 2516 penalty minutes. His trademark became his laughter, because whenever he opened his mouth, all you could see was an empty area where the front teeth should have been. He lost her when he was shot in the face with a puck.
