Claude Joseph Antoine Provost (born September 17, 1933 in Montreal , Québec , † April 17, 1984 in Florida , USA ) was a Canadian ice hockey player (right winger) and coach who served from 1955 to 1970 for the Montréal Canadiens in the National Hockey League played.
Career
During his junior years he played with Scotty Bowman at the Montréal Junior Canadiens in the QJHA . In the senior division, he initially played with the Shawinigan Cataracts in the QHL .
When Toe Blake took over as coach of the Montréal Canadiens for the 1955/56 season , he brought him into the squad. It should bring more physical robustness to the star team of the Canadiens. In a row with André Pronovost and Phil Goyette , with whom he had already played as a junior player, the defensive striker also developed his offensive qualities. He took part in the NHL All-Star Game eleven times in a row . The development of his offensive skills brought him various awards such as a nomination to the First All-Star Team in his later years . He made it into the top ten scorers of the NHL in the 1964/65 season and in 1968 he was the first player to be awarded the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy . After nine Stanley Cup victories, he ended his active career in 1970.
In June 1971 the Canadiens sold the rights to him to the Los Angeles Kings , but he decided to train the Rosemount National in the QJHL and against a return to the NHL.
In 1984 he died of a heart attack while playing tennis in Florida.
