Rodrigue Gabriel "Rod" Gilbert (born July 1, 1941 in Montreal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played 1144 games for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League between 1957 and 1978 has contested on the position of the right winger . Gilbert was one of the most influential players in the franchise credit history of the New York Rangers, in which he records the most goals and points scorer stops and the player's shirt number 7 since 1979 banned is. In addition to numerous individual awards - including the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy - he was honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982 .
Career
As a junior, Gilbert played with the Guelph Biltmores in the Ontario Hockey Association . After a short but successful assignment with the Lions de Trois-Rivières in the Eastern Professional Hockey League (EPHL) with ten points in three games, he went back to Guelph, where the team had now been renamed Royals. Here he was top scorer with 54 goals and with 103 points before his teammate Jean Ratelle top scorer of the OHA. In this 1960/61 season he was also allowed to go on the ice for the New York Rangers in the NHL.
The 1961/62 season he played because of a back injury only one game for the Rangers and the rest of the season in the EPHL with the Kitchener-Waterloo Beavers . At the playoffs he was called back to the Rangers due to some injuries and here he was very successful with five points in four games. In the 1962/63 season he had his final breakthrough in the NHL. In the 1967/68 season he raised his game to a new level for the first time with 77 scorer points. From 1970 he played together with Jean Ratelle and Vic Hadfield in the GAG (Goal-A-Game) line . That year, that series helped Rangers get 107 points. In 1971/72 he personally played his most successful season with 97 scorer points. The three players from the GAG Line occupied places 3 to 5 in the scorer list this season.
He also played with the Canadian team at the 1972 Summit Series . Despite numerous offers, especially from the competitive league of the World Hockey Association , he remained loyal to the Rangers throughout his career. As the eleventh player in NHL history, he reached the 1,000 point mark shortly before his friend and long-time teammate Jean Ratelle . After the 1977/78 season, he ended his career.
In 1980 he took over the New Haven Nighthawks in the American Hockey League as a coach. In 1982 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
