Gary R. Roberts (born May 23, 1966 in North York , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 1354 games for the Calgary Flames , Carolina Hurricanes , Toronto Maple Leafs , Florida Panthers during his playing career between 1982 and 2009 , Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . Roberts celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Calgary Flames by winning the Stanley Cup in 1989 .

Career

youth

In his youth, Roberts played ice hockey as well as lacrosse and won the Minto Cup with his childhood friend Joe Nieuwendyk at the Whitby Warriors. In the junior division, Roberts played in the OHL for the Ottawa 67’s . After his second season there he was drawn in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames in the first round as 12th. Even then, in addition to his scoring qualities, he was characterized by his robust style of play. Crashing body checks and the tendency to get rid of his ice hockey gloves for fights , but also a “killer” instinct in front of the goal distinguish Roberts as one of the best goal-threatening power forwards . In the next two years he played first in Ottawa, but then moved within the OHL to the Guelph Platers . In the meantime, he also played the Moncton Golden Flames in the AHL for Calgary's farm team .

The 1986/87 season he started in Moncton, but later made the jump to the NHL. Until the 1988/89 season , in which he was able to win the Stanley Cup with the Flames , his penalty minutes were particularly great. He came up with over 200 minutes year after year. But then the knot burst as a scorer. Up until then, he had never achieved more than 38 points, and values between 70 and 90 followed in the next few years.

In the mid-1990s, Roberts had to pay tribute to his tough playing style. Constant pain in his arm and neck forced him to skip games again and again. More detailed examinations showed serious nerve damage in the neck area. Roberts ended the 1995/96 season prematurely and underwent a risky operation, during which the doctors could not assure him whether he could ever play ice hockey again. He sat out completely the following season and started a very tough rehabilitation program.

Roberts wanted to know again for the 1997/98 season and the Carolina Hurricanes gave the free agent a chance. He got 49 points in 61 games and stayed in Carolina for three years. A lucrative contract then lured him to the Toronto Maple Leafs . Here he met his childhood friend and long-time teammate from Calgary Joe Nieuwendyk again . He played successfully in Toronto for four years, but after the strike season 2004/05 the Leafs Roberts and Nieuwendyk had to give up for financial reasons. Both went to the Florida Panthers and had a good season there. While Nieuwendyk ended his career in the 2006/07 season , Roberts was more and more often part of transfer speculation and the closer the transfer window came, the more concrete they became, which was reinforced by the sporting downturn of the Panthers. A few days before the February 27, 2007 transfer closes, Roberts said that only Toronto and the Ottawa Senators would be possible new employers for him . However, 24 hours before the end of the transfer, the Panthers agreed on a transfer with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Roberts agreed to move to Pittsburgh after a few hours. Roberts is having a good season for the Penguins and will soon be loved by fans for his robust style of play and great leadership. In the summer of 2007, Roberts signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins . On December 29, 2007 in the game against the Buffalo Sabers Roberts broke his leg and fell until the start of the playoffs in April 2008. In the summer he joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent for a year.

On March 4, 2009, the day of the NHL trade deadline, Roberts was placed on the Tampa Bay Lightning waiver list without consulting the club . After Roberts was unable to find a buyer in the last hours of the deadline, he remained on the club's waiver list without any results. Roberts drew his conclusions from the actions of the Tampa Bay Lightning on March 6, 2009 and ended his more than two decades-long hockey career at almost 43 years of age.
