Laxey ([ ˈlɛksi ], from Old Norse Laxá "salmon river", Manx : Laksaa ) is a place and political municipality (English parish }) in the east of the Isle of Man . According to the 2001 census, the place has 1,725 inhabitants.

Lead and zinc mining gained importance in the 19th century . In this context, the Great Laxey Wheel - named "Lady Isabella" after the wife of the governor at the time - was built by engineer Robert Casement. This waterwheel was used to pump water from the Great Laxey Mining Company's mine until 1929 . Today the water wheel is one of the main tourist attractions on the island; it is the largest waterwheel in Europe at 72 feet in diameter . The Laxey Wheel is shown, among other things, on the 20 pound note. It is also sung about in a folk song of the same name .

Laxey is on the Manx Electric Railway and is the starting point for the Snaefell Mountain Railway .
