Anders Hugo Hedberg (born February 25, 1951 in Örnsköldsvik ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who played from 1974 to 1985 for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League and the Winnipeg Jets in the World Hockey Association .
Career
As a player
In Sweden he played for MoDo Hockeyklubb in Örnsköldsvik and was invited to the national team for the first time at the age of 17 in 1969, but had to decline because of his studies. In 1970 he came to his first international assignments and was able to convince.
With the Swedish national ice hockey team he played at the World Championships in 1970 , 1972 , 1973 and 1974 and was able to win the silver and bronze medals twice. In Sweden he had meanwhile switched to Djurgårdens IF .
In the summer of 1974 he went to North America. Europeans were still the exception in the National Hockey League , but players from Scandinavia were on the rise in the still young World Hockey Association . At the Winnipeg Jets , he and his compatriot Ulf Nilsson played in a series with the legendary Bobby Hull . The three formed one of the strongest series of storms in the WHA. He was named the best rookie in his first season . In the coming years he was always among the best scorers of the WHA and was able to exceed the 100 points from his first season in the following three seasons.
For the 1978/79 season he moved together with Ulf Nilsson in the NHL to the New York Rangers . He was also able to convince there and was top scorer twice in his first three years. He represented the NHL at the 1979 Challenge Cup . He missed the 1981/82 season almost completely due to injury. In his last NHL season 1984/85 he played in the NHL All-Star Game and was the first European to be awarded the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy .
As a functionary
Between 1991 and 1997 Hedberg was employed as a scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs . He was then assistant general manager of the franchise for two years. In 2000 he was appointed General Manager of the Swedish national team and held this role for two years. He took part in two world championships and the 2002 Winter Olympics with the national team. Between 2002 and 2007 he was director of player development for the Ottawa Senators . He then became Chief Scout for Europe for the New York Rangers.
As part of the men's ice hockey world championship in 1997 , he was honored with admission to the IIHF Hall of Fame . In February 2012 he was also inducted into the Swedish Ice Hockey Hall of Fame .
