Challenge Cup 1979
The Challenge Cup was an ice hockey series over three games in 1979 between an all-star selection of players from the North American professional league National Hockey League and the national team of the USSR . The games were in Madison Square Garden in the US New York City discharged and replaced the NHL All-Star Game of the 1978/79 season .
In contrast to its predecessor, the Summit Series , non-Canadian players also took part in the international comparisons. The games were played on February 8, 10 and 11, 1979. After the NHL All-Stars won their first game, the USSR struck back in the next two games. After a narrow win in the second game with one goal difference, they won the third and final game with a clear 6-0. The most successful goalscorer of the series was the Russian Boris Mikhailov with a total of three goals. Mike Bossy scored two goals for the NHL and was the series' most successful scorer with four points. The goalkeeper Wladimir Myshkin managed a shutout in the third game of the series.
