history

Club history

VfB Rheine was created on June 27, 1971 through the merger of the Rot-Weiß Rheine and FC Rheine clubs . Both parent clubs were also the product of club mergers. Rot-Weiß Rheine was created on June 22, 1969 through the merger of Borussia Rheine and VfL Rheine . The FC Rheine in turn was founded on July 12, 1969 through the merger of BV Rheine with SpVgg Rheine . Borussia Rheine won the Westphalia Championship in 1928 with a 3-2 win against VfB 03 Bielefeld . BV Rheine played three years, SpVgg Rheine one year in the highest Westphalian amateur league. On July 10, 1994, VfB merged with SG Eintracht Rheine to form FC Eintracht Rheine . The women's football department split off on March 10, 1998 as FFC Heike Rheine from FC Eintracht.

Women's soccer

The VfB women's team rose in 1989 to what was then the first-class Regionalliga West and surprisingly qualified as runner-up in the 1989/90 season for the newly created Bundesliga. There the team took third place in the northern group in 1992 and 1993. In both years, the team also reached the semi-finals in the DFB Cup . The best-known player at VfB Rheine is Kerstin Stegemann , who played 191 times for the German national team.

Men's soccer

The men's team of VfB started in the regional league and in 1973 made it to the Association League Westphalia . There the team immediately reached seventh place and an average attendance of 4,160. In 1978 VfB was runner-up in his season after the playoffs against 1. FC Paderborn were lost 0: 1 and 1: 1. The team then had to play playoffs to participate in the German amateur championship . After a 2-1 first leg win against SpVgg Erkenschwick, the Rheinenser lost 2-0 after extra time in the second leg .

VfB was thus qualified for the newly created Oberliga Westfalen. After two years of relegation battle, the team achieved the best placement in the 1980/81 season with sixth place. A year later, VfB celebrated its highest league victory with an 8-1 win at STV Horst-Emscher . In 1983 VfB was unfortunately relegated. Since a second division team was relegated with TuS Schloß Neuhaus and upper division champion Eintracht Hamm-Heessen missed the promotion, the Rheinenser had to relegate as third from bottom.

After a third place in the 1985/86 season, VfB returned to the league two years later as a league champion. On the last day of the match, the club welcomed 12,000 spectators to the home game against Arminia Bielefeld . VfB beat Arminia 2: 1 and provided Bielefeld's competitor Preußen Münster with shooting assistance, who snatched the championship away from Arminia with a 0-0 win at SC Verl . A year later, VfB remained in the league only because of the better goal difference compared to Hammer SpVg . In 1991, the Rheinenser rose again from the league and sank in the midfield of the association league.

Youth football

The B-Juniors of VfB Rheine were Westphalia champions in 1985 and 1986 respectively. In 1986 the male C-youth was also Westfalenmeister.
