Career

Mühlenberg won the German Amateur Championship three times in a row with SC Jülich in 1910 from 1969 to 1972. The 1. FC Köln became aware of Mühlenberg and signed him for the Bundesliga squad for the 1972/73 season. However, just a year later he left Cologne again and moved to neighbor Bayer 04 Leverkusen . But even there it only lasted a year. In 1974 he moved to VfL Osnabrück . For four years he was one of the stars of VfL, scoring 64 goals in 162 games. As a flank, corner and free kick specialist, he was an important player for goal scorer Gerd-Volker Schock . In 1978 he was given leave of absence for disciplinary reasons following an internal conflict. He moved to the Westphalian league club VfB Rheine , where he ended his active career early.

As a coach he caused a sensation at Sportfreunde Oesede , which he led from the district class to the Lower Saxony league. In 1993 he returned to VfL Osnabrück as an A youth coach and in December 1995 took over the post of head coach from Heiko Flottmann . After 23 successful months, Mühlenberg resigned from the head coach position due to public criticism and then trained the amateurs of VfL Osnabrück. Subsequently, Mühlenberg took over the Landesliga team from Viktoria Georgsmarienhütte. In the summer of 2006, Blau-Weiß Lohne Mühlenberg succeeded in signing his district top division team. This engagement ended in a bitter decline after three years.

Mühlenberg is a sports teacher at the Carolinum grammar school (Osnabrück) .
