The SpVgg Rheine was a sports club from Rheine in the Steinfurt district . The first soccer team played in the highest amateur league in Westphalia for a year.

history

Spielvereinigung 09 Rheine was created in 1919 through the merger of SV Rheine, founded in 1909, with SC Ballsport Rheine and FC Hertha Rheine . After several third places in the Emsland district class , the game association became champions in 1952 and rose to the Landesliga Westfalen , which was the highest amateur league in the country at the time. The guest appearance in the Westphalian Oberhaus ended unhappily after a year with relegation. The team ended the season tied with SC Hassel , TSG Dülmen and Sportfreunde Gladbeck . After the relegation round, the Rheiner and the Gladbeck were tied. Gladbeck won the play-off in neutral Münster 2-1.

1957 succeeded in promotion to the state league, which was only the second highest Westphalian league after the introduction of the Association League in the year before. After two years of relegation battle, it went back to the district class in 1959. On July 12, 1969 the SpVgg merged with the BV to form FC Rheine . This rose to the national league in the same year and merged on June 27, 1971 with Borussia's successor Rot-Weiß Rheine to form VfB Rheine , which in turn merged with FC Eintracht Rheine on July 10, 1994 .
