The Westphalian Football League has been the third highest division of the Westphalian Football and Athletics Association in men's football since the 2012/13 season and is located at the seventh highest level of the German league system .
history
founding
The founding of the Landesliga Westfalen was decided in September 1945 initially under the name 1st Division West as the sporting successor to the Gauliga Westfalen . In the first season, which began in February 1946 and was played in the two geographically separate seasons West and East, those 18 teams took part in the game operation that had played in the Gauliga between 1939 and 1944. The season winners of the first season were FC Schalke 04 and SpVgg Erkenschwick . However, there was no final.
Historical development
The national league played until 1948 and in the 1949/50 season in two seasons, in the 1948/49 season in three seasons and from 1950 to 1952 as a single-track league. Between 1952 and 2012, the regional league was played unchanged in five seasons for six decades. There have been four seasons since then.
Until the 1955/56 season, the state league was the top division in Westphalia. When the Association League Westphalia was founded in 1956, the state league was initially the second highest, and after the Oberliga Westfalen was founded in 1978 it was only the third highest Westphalian league. After the dissolution of the Oberliga Westfalen in favor of the NRW League in 2008, the Landesliga was the second highest division. Since the league structure reform in 2012 and the reintroduction of the Oberliga Westfalen, the Landesliga is again only the third highest league in Westphalia.
In the German league system, the regional league was first class when it was founded and has since slipped several times through the introduction of higher divisions ( Oberliga West 1947, 2nd Oberliga West 1949, Verbandsliga Westfalen 1956, Oberliga Westfalen 1978, Regionalliga West 1994 and most recently 3rd League 2008) until today the seventh level of the league system.
Current mode
As of the 2012/13 season, the Landesliga Westfalen will consist of four relays with a target strength of 16 teams each. The exact division of the squadrons is made every year according to geographical aspects.
Promotion to the Westphalia League
The champions of each season are promoted to the Westfalenliga , unless a team from the same club is already playing in this division. In this case, as well as in the case of renouncing promotion, the next best placed, ready for promotion and approved team of the respective relay moves up. If there are more vacancies in the Westfalenliga, the runners-up in all seasons will play further promoted players in a promotion round.
Relegation to the district league
The teams placed on the table ranks 14 and lower in each season are relegated to the district league. The champions rise from the district league to the state league. If there are more vacancies in the regional league, the runners-up in all seasons will play further promoted players in a promotion round.

2nd national league
Between 1950 and 1952 there was a three-track 2nd Landesliga Westfalen under the single-track Landesliga Westfalen , which formed the intermediate stage between the 1st Landesliga and the district classes. In 1952 the 2nd national league was dissolved. Also in 1952 a final round of the three season winners was played, but this was of no importance for the promotion question. The master of this round is marked in bold .
