Fortuna Schlangen , officially the football club Fortuna Schlangen eV , is a football club made up of Schlangen in the district of Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia . The first soccer team played as VfL Schlangen in the highest Westphalian amateur league for five years.

history

The association was founded on January 1, 1921 and had to take the name TuS Schlangen on April 10, 1939 . In 1946, under pressure from the British occupying forces , all sports clubs in Schlangen were united in VfL Schlangen . The first soccer team made it into the district class in 1959 and was runner-up behind TuS Spork-Wendlinghausen two years later . In 1963 he was promoted to the regional league , where VfL held midfield positions for several years in a row. In 1970 VfL Schlangen was runner-up behind 1. FC Paderborn and met the runner-up of the other four national league seasons SV Netphen , TuS Eving-Lindenhorst , 1. FC Gladbeck and SVA Bockum-Hövel in a promotion round . Here the VfL prevailed and rose to the third-class association league at the time, which was the highest amateur league in Westphalia at the time.

In the association league, the team was only in serious danger of relegation in the 1971/72 season. Merger talks with the BV Bad Lippspringe broke up. The most successful years in the club's history followed, when VfL Schlangen finished eighth in the 1972/73 and 1973/74 seasons. In the course of the so-called tax office affair , VfL could not build on these successes and had to relegate back to the state league in 1975 as the penultimate three points behind VfB 03 Bielefeld . Back in the national league, the club caused a sensation by signing Brazilian Mike Hasai from Chicago . VfL was runner-up behind Spvg Steinhagen in 1976 and was relegated from the national league a year later under player- coach Detlef Kemena . The Schlangener failed just like VfL Mennighüffen in a playoff round at SV Löhne-Obernbeck tied on points . In 1983 VfL was relegated to the district league and in 1985 rose again to the district league under player-coach Hans-Ulrich Brückner.

Two years later there were disputes between the football department and the board of VfL Schlangen. As a result, the football department broke away from VfL and founded an independent club with FC Fortuna. Also in 1988 the team returned to the regional league and two years later had to relegate to the regional league, where the team was runner-up in 1998 behind SV Werl-Aspe . In 2002 it went down to the district league B after three relegations in a row. Fortuna has been playing in the district league A Detmold since it was promoted again in 2009 and was runner-up there in 2010, 2011 and 2017.
