The Spvg Steinhagen (officially: Sportvereinigung Steinhagen eV ) is a German sports club from the municipality of Steinhagen in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Gütersloh . The club was founded on September 7, 1945 and has the club colors red and white. The soccer department is one of the most successful departments of the club after the table tennis players . The Steinhagener played eight years in the highest amateur league in Westphalia and took part in the DFB Cup once. The sports association's venue is the Cronsbachstadion .

history

Early years (1934 to 1966)

The Steinhagener football history began in 1908 when a few young Steinhageners played at Kriegerplatz on Bahnhofstrasse. Development worker was VfB 03 Bielefeld . The First World War brought an abrupt end. After the end of the war, the club decided to buy a football on February 4, 1921 , but it took until July 10, 1934 before a football department was founded. This received financial independence three years later. After the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, TuS Jahn Steinhagen was only able to offer youth football.

In 1949, after two playoffs against VfL Ummeln , the Steinhageners secured the district championship and rose to the district class as second in the following round of promotion. After many years in the middle of the table, Spvg became runner-up behind VfL Schildesche in 1957 . Four years later, the team secured the championship with seven points ahead of Germania Westerwiehe and rose to the fourth-class national league at the time . The highlights of the following national league era were the derbies against SV Brackwede , which attracted up to 4,000 spectators.

In 1964 the Steinhagener “red shirts” were transferred from season 1 to season 5 and met there among others the amateurs from Borussia Dortmund , who were defeated 4-0 on the first day of the match. At the end of the season it was only enough for fourth from last place, which meant relegation. The direct ascent was achieved under dramatic circumstances. On the last day of the match, the Steinhageners met the second team of VfB 03 Bielefeld , the direct competitor for the championship. VfB led 1-0 before the game had to be interrupted for 45 minutes due to a violent thunderstorm . After the restart, the Spvg turned the game, won 3-1 and returned to the national league.

Association league, regional league, DFB Cup (1966 to 1985)

At the end of the 1960s, the club moved into the new Cronsbach Stadium, which in 1968 was given natural grass . In the very first season on the new course, the "red shirts", who strengthened themselves with the former Bundesliga goalkeeper Erich Staude , were runner-up in season 1 behind Minden 05 . A promotion round was played out together with the runners-up from the other national league seasons and the two third-bottom of the association leagues . First, Spvg defeated Teutonia Lippstadt in Beckum and, after a 1-0 win against Sportfreunde Siegen in Dortmund, they were promoted to the association league, which was then the highest amateur league in Westphalia. The decisive goal was scored by Manfred Schüürmanns, while goalkeeper Erich Staude distinguished himself with numerous saves. In the 1969/70 promotion season, the Spvg reached sixth place in the table. Games against SVA Gütersloh or SV Brackwede were watched by up to 7,000 spectators.

In 1972, the Steinhagener rose as penultimate table back from the state league. In the following years, a new team was built, which in 1975 was runner- up behind FC Gohfeld . Finally, in 1976, he was promoted back to the association league. With a 13 point lead over the VfL Schlangen , the "red shirts" trained by Erich Staude around Norbert Leopoldseder , Uwe Pallaks and Uli Hegemann became champions. At the same time, Spvg qualified for the first and only time to date for the DFB Cup. In the first round of the 1976/77 season , the “red shirts” met Bundesliga club VfL Bochum . Bochum won the game 3-0 in front of 5,000 spectators with two goals from Josef Kaczor and one goal from Hans-Joachim Pochstein . Steinhagen played in the following line-up: Wolfgang Klöpping - Klaus Pallacks, Rolf Uthmann, Friedhelm Schmidt, Jürgen Hentschel - Grentz (74th Brune), Norbert Leopoldseder, Block - Uli Hegemann, Vogt, Reiner Wichert (60th Manfred Schüürmanns) - Trainer: Günter Niedermowwe

In the association league it was enough without the striker Uwe Pallaks, who switched to the second division club SC Herford , only to the penultimate place with four points behind the Hammer SpVg , so that the Steinhagener had to go back to the state league after only one year. In the 1977/78 season, due to the introduction of the Oberliga Westfalen, three teams from each national league relay could be promoted, while the fourth had to play a promotion round. With two points behind TuS Horn-Bad Meinberg , however, qualification was missed in fifth place. In the following years, the "red shirts" did not get beyond mediocrity in the regional league. In 1983, the relegation to the district league could only just be avoided when the Spvg showed a point ahead of the first relegated and local rival TSG Harsewinkel in the final accounts . Two years later, the team finally achieved the third promotion to the Association League. On the last day of the match, the championship was secured against SpVg Brakel after a 3: 3 in their own stadium .

Most successful years and decline (1985 to 2006)

The Steinhagener started successfully in the new era of the association league. In the first two seasons after promotion, the team was sixth each, before relegation was barely avoided in 1988. In the end, the “red shirts” were two points ahead of the first relegated Bünder SV . The seasons 1988/89 and 1989/90 should represent the sporting highlight of the club's history, in which the team reached third place. In 1989, Spvg was seven points behind champions SpVg Beckum, and Meik Tischler was the top scorer in the league. A year later it was four points behind runner-up 1. FC Recklinghausen , who made it to the league promotion after relegation.

The Spvg also made a name for itself in the youth field and reached the second highest division in Westphalia at the time with the regional league. There the Steinhageners met well-known clubs such as Preußen Münster , FC Gütersloh and Borussia Lippstadt . In the following years, however, the Steinhagen gentlemen were no longer able to continue. As early as 1991, the team was relegated to the bottom of the table in the regional league and two years later found themselves in the district league. There the team always achieved single-digit placements, with tenth place in the 1998/99 season being the sporting low point. In the meantime, the Bielefeld District Cup was won in 19932. In May 2000 the “Red Shirts” played a friendly against the traditional team of the German Football Association around Rudi Völler .

Two years later, under coach Jochen Krämer, the Steinhageners succeeded in returning to the state league as champions, where fourth place was achieved in the 2003/04 season. Two years later it went back to the district league. Halfway through the season, the team played for promotion before a downward trend began in the second half of the season. After a 1-1 draw on the last match day at champions SC Wiedenbrück 2000 , the Steinhageners slipped to a relegation zone, as the Free Turnerschaft Dützen were able to overtake the TuS Tengern with a 2-1 win at the same time . In the meantime, the team reached the final of the district cup in 2004 and 2005, but lost 9-0 to the amateurs of Arminia Bielefeld and 8-1 to VfB Fichte Bielefeld . The second team of the Spvg from 2003 to 2005 as the first reserve team from the old district of Halle, the district league.

Present (since 2006)

With the descent, Michael Johannig took over the chairmanship of the football department. At the same time, the club relied increasingly on players from its own offspring. The new club philosophy should pay off. In 2010 Spvg was runner-up behind TSV Victoria Clarholz and reached the semi-finals in the district cup. A year later, coach Carsten Johannig's team secured the championship and promotion to the regional league with 101 goals this season and 18 points ahead. Sebastian Herrmann and Dominic Höfel, who took the first two places on the district league's top scorer list with 29 and 27 goals respectively, played a major role in the success. The 2011 district cup final was lost 3-1 against TuS Dornberg .

In the national league, the “red shirts” achieved fourth place in the 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2015/16 seasons. In 2013, the Steinhageners still had a chance of promotion or the promotion round of the runner-up until the last match day, before a 3-4 home defeat against VfB Fichte Bielefeld only brought fourth place. A year later, the Steinhagener again reached the final of the district cup, but lost against VfL Theesen with 0: 7. In 2016, they won the district cup with a 7-1 win against Türk Sport Bielefeld . As a result, the “red shirts” qualified for the Westphalia Cup , where the team lost 8-1 to third division SC Paderborn 07 in the first round .

In terms of sport, things went downhill in the 2017/18 national league season. After coach Daniel Keller announced his departure at the end of the season, he was given leave of absence in mid-March 2018. The team was on a relegation zone at this time. Keller's successor was former German international Jörg Böhme , who was unable to prevent relegation at the end of the season. Boehme's successor Tobias Brockschnieder resigned in February 2019 after disputes with the players. Mario Lüke took over the team and managed to get it back up straight away.

Stadion

The home games of the first men's team have been played in the 5,000-seat Cronsbachstadion since 1968 . The stadium is located in the south of the Steinhagen community between the grammar school and Queller Strasse. The lawn play area is surrounded by a running track . Until the beginning of the 1990s there was a covered main grandstand with seats, but the roof was later removed because it was dilapidated .

The Cronsbachstadion was opened with a friendly match between a combination of Spvg Steinhagen and SpVgg Fichte Bielefeld and Bundesliga club Hannover 96 . The Cronsbachstadion was last renovated in 2008 and received a new grandstand with 300 seats. To mark the reopening, the “Red Shirts” played a friendly against Bundesliga club Arminia Bielefeld and lost 0:11. On July 10, 1982, the Bielefeld team played their home game in the Intertoto Cup against FC St. Gallen in the Cronsbach Stadium. In front of 2,500 spectators, Arminia won 3-1.

The artificial turf pitch at the Cronsbachstadion is used for the youth department. The remaining two grass pitches are suitable for training purposes. Like the stadium, all side seats are floodlit . In 2009 the new club house became a sports club ! opened, which is north of the stadium. Until the opening of the Cronsbach Stadium, the Steinhageners played on the Drei Linden sports field .
