The 1971/72 season was the 16th season of the third-class Verbandsliga Westfalen . Westfalenmeister became Sportfreunde Siegen , who made the leap into the regional league in the following round of promotion . SV Brackwede , SpVgg Herten and Spvg Steinhagen got out of Group 1 ; from group 2 the SG Castrop-Rauxel and the amateurs from Borussia Dortmund . From the Regionalliga West, VfL Klafeld-Geisweid was relegated to the Association League . Ahlener SV , TuS Eving-Lindenhorst , TSG Harsewinkel , SC Neheim-Hüsten and SC Recklinghausen rose from the national leagues .

Westphalia Championship
The two group winners should return game determined the Westfalen champion. The games took place on May 7th and 11th, 1972. Here the sports fans won victories against the STV Horst-Emscher. Both teams were able to win their respective home games. Since the away goals rule did not apply, the decision was made on penalties . Both teams qualified for the promotion round to Regionalliga West .

Qualification for the German Amateur Championship
The runners-up of the two groups determined the Westphalian participant in the German amateur championship in the two legs . The game was played on May 7 and 14, 1972. TSV Marl-Hüls prevailed against SSV Hagen and qualified for the German Amateur Championship, where Marl-Hüls lost to FSV Frankfurt in the final .

Playoffs against relegation
The third from bottom of the two groups determined the fifth relegated to the national league in a game on a neutral position. The game was played on May 14, 1972 in Dortmund - Hombruch . The RSV Meinerzhagen prevailed and sent the SpVgg Herten into the state league.
