Manfred M. Kappes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manfred M. Kappes (born September 23, 1957 in Bonn ) is a German physical chemist ( nanotechnology ).

Kappes studied chemistry from 1973 at Concordia University in Montreal with a master’s degree in 1977 and received his doctorate in 1981 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under R. Staley (mass spectrometric investigations on the gas phase chemistry of (atomic) transition metal cations) . In 1981 he became assistant and later senior assistant at the University of Bern , where he completed his habilitation in physical chemistry in 1987 (investigations into the electronic structure of alkali metal clusters in the molecular beam) . In 1987 he became assistant professor and 1989 associate professor at Northwestern University and in 1991 professor for physical chemistry of microscopic systems (clusters and nanoscale systems) at the University of Karlsruhe . From 1998 he headed the physical chemistry working group at the Institute for Nanotechnology at the Karlsruhe Research Center and was a member of the board of directors from 2008. From 2003 to 2005 he was Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biosciences.

He deals with the geometry and electronic structure of clusters and developed methods to store mass-selected molecular ions and deposit them on surfaces as clusters and examine them spectroscopically. This also led to the investigation of the electronic structure of multiply negatively charged molecular ions and of novel carbon nanostructures.

In 2009 he received the Van't Hoff Prize of the German Bunsen Society and in 2010 the Hector Science Prize , making him a member of the Hector Fellow Academy. In 1991 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 2017 he became a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , 2011 the Leopoldina and 2008 the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . In 2006 he was a Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

From 1993 to 1998 he was co-editor of the reports of the Bunsen Society and from 2002 to 2004 of the Journal of Chemical Physics .
