Union Recklinghausen (officially: 1. Recklinghausen Sports Club Union eV ) was a sports club from Recklinghausen . The first soccer team played for two years in what was then the first-class Gauliga Westfalen .

history

The club was founded in 1905 and rose to the top division in 1922. Union missed the final of the Westphalia Championship against Arminia Bielefeld due to a 2: 3 defeat in the playoff against Westfalia Scherlebeck . In the following years the team could not build on this success and rose again in 1927 with 0:28 points as bottom of the table. The direct resurgence was missed after a 2-4 playoff loss against BV 09 Hamm . It was not until 1930 that the Union returned to the top class and in 1932 it was runner-up in the western relay of the Westphalia regional league behind SpVgg Herten . A year later, the team missed the qualification for the newly created Gauliga Westfalen.

In 1934 the Unioners became district class champions and prevailed in the promotion round to the Gauliga together with Westfalia Herne . The Recklinghausen benefited from the better goal quotient compared to VfB 03 Bielefeld . In the 1934/35 season , the team managed a 1-0 victory over the series champions FC Schalke 04 and managed to stay eighth. A year later, however, Union rose as a knocked-down bottom of the table and remained lower class until the end of the war .

In 1945 the Unioners were grouped into the Recklinghausen district class and two years later they were runner-up behind their local rivals SuS . In 1950, Union became champions and was promoted to the 2nd Landesliga Westfalen, where the team immediately became runner-up behind BV Buer 07 . After the dissolution of the league, Union was taken over in 1952 in the then third-class Landesliga Westfalen . Here the Unioners achieved third place in 1953 and 1955, but missed the newly created Association League Westphalia in 1956 .

A few more years in the midfield of the regional league followed, before relegation to the district class in 1960. Two years later, he was even relegated to the district class. In 1972 the union finally merged with Prussia Hochlarmark and Wacker Recklinghausen to form Eintracht Recklinghausen . In 1981, Eintracht merged with SC Recklinghausen to form 1. FC Recklinghausen , which was dissolved in 1996 for financial reasons. FC 96 Recklinghausen was founded as the successor club.
