Helmut Domagalla (born October 28, 1932 , † October 7, 1995 ) was a German football goalkeeper and coach .

Player career

Helmut Domagalla came from Union Recklinghausen to the neighboring second division club SpVgg Erkenschwick , with whom he signed a contract in February 1955 at the latest. When the Erkenschwicker even had to relegate to the association league in the summer of 1957 , Domagalla moved to the western upper division Wuppertaler SV . In his first year at WSV he was the second man behind goalkeeper Klaus Wilhelm ; after the club was relegated in 1958, he became the goalkeeper of the blue-reds, for whom he played 74 second division games until 1962.

The team also came in the second division with a number of good players, in particular also from Erkenschwick to Bergisch -down Horst Szymaniak , but Günter Augustat , Erich Haase , Theo Kolkenbrock , Vitus Sauer , Werner Tönges and Erich Ribbeck ; thus the WSV was able to play along for promotion in the following period. The season 1959/60 closed Domagallas Elf tied with SV Sodingen and TSV Marl-Hüls and had the best goal difference of the three opponents; However, since the goal quotient was decisive at the time, the WSV was only third in the table. Then it took until 1962 before the Wuppertalers managed to return to the top division. In their last season before the introduction of the Bundesliga , Helmut Domagalla played 22 point games in the top German division, and in August 1963 the goalkeeper, who was always objective and calm, experienced one of the sporting highlights of his career when the WSV returned to the second division overcrowded home stadium at the zoo, the DFB Cup semi-final against the "big" Hamburger SV . Domagalla only had to admit defeat to Fritz Boyens , who benefited from a defensive error by defender Manfred Paschke and scored the only goal of the encounter.

In the following two years, coach Robert Gebhardt Domagalla played in 25 games in the Regionalliga West . However, he is said to have increasingly "fallen out of favor" with "Zapf" Gebhardt, so that he was only number two behind Dieter Auris ; before Auris came to WSV, he wasn't a footballer, but field handball goalkeeper at Bayer Leverkusen . As early as 1964, when the Bergische knocked on the Bundesliga gate in second place behind Alemannia Aachen and had to play two promotion round qualifying games against FK Pirmasens , the coach Auris preferred him. The “Schuhstädter” surprisingly prevailed with two wins (2-0 and 2-1). After he had only been in the starting line-up for five league games in the 1964/65 season, Helmut Domagalla, who had been working full-time as a pool attendant in the Barmer Kurbad since the 1950s , ended his playing career.

Coaching activities

From November 1965, Wuppertaler SV gave him responsibility as the club's A-youth coach; At the same time, Helmut Domagalla completed training as a football teacher. From 1967 to 1970 he took over the first men of VfL Wuppertal in 1912 , was in the same position in the 1970/71 season at Heckinghauser Landesligisten Wuppertaler SC and then at Solingen SC 95/98 (1971/72) and Germania Wuppertal (1972/73) active; Germania and VfL were to merge three years later to form SV Borussia Wuppertal . Domagalla's activity as a coach has been characterized as "successful in the amateur field".

In 1995 the married father of two Helmut Domagalla died “after a short, serious illness”.
