Swimming master , colloquially also called lifeguard , is an outdated master's title for employees in swimming pools . In Switzerland he is called Badmeister . They monitor the entire swimming pool. This includes safety, order and cleanliness in the bathroom, the management of the swimming pool staff, the monitoring of the water quality, the maintenance of the water treatment systems, the control of operational processes, the training and testing of swimmers and, in many pools, responsibility for finances.

Germany

The official job title in Germany today is certified master for swimming pools (this is how you can call yourself who has completed the master's training or was a state-certified swimming master and passed an additional examination). Until 1998 the job title was state-certified swimming master . This type of training to become a specialist or master for pool operations is only available in Germany. It differs depending on the state. In Bavaria, for example, there is the Bavarian Administration School , in Saxony the Landesschwimmmeisterschule Freistaat Sachsen e. V. , in Baden-Württemberg the commercial vocational school Heinrich Lanz Schule I in Mannheim is responsible.

Certified masters for swimming pools are supported by specialists for swimming pools (formerly: swimming master assistant ). The specialist can manage an outdoor or indoor swimming pool, but a certified master is required to manage more than one swimming pool. A master craftsman is also allowed to train (the authorization is acquired during further training to become a master craftsman) and even teach practical lessons at vocational schools. Here, the technical competence in the administrative area is expanded and strengthened. Lifeguards support the swimming master in his most well-known task: observing what is happening in the baths and helping bathers after swimming accidents.

Swimming masters have swimming and lifeguard badges , but the profession with its final examination is even more highly qualified than the badges mentioned. They are authorized to test swimming badges. Some swimming masters also train a swimming team .

Swimming masters are partly organized in the Federal Association of German Swimming Masters .

Austria

In addition to classic salvage and rescue, there are other focal points in the training with hygiene and pool water treatment . The top level of the training matrix is called a specialist for bathing facilities . It is concluded with a federal professional examination . Successful graduates receive the protected title of “specialist in bathing facilities with a federal certificate ” from the Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology (OPET). The training positions itself in the European educational framework at level 4 of the European Qualification Framework  (EQF). Pool operators are organized in the Association of Indoor and Outdoor Pools Switzerland  (VHF), employees in the Swiss Association of Bathers  (SBV). Both associations are members of the igba.

The older name was "Badmeister mit eidg. Certificate ».

Europe

In the remaining European countries, only lifeguards are used who are responsible for supervising the swimming pool as well as for animation and cleaning. The job of pool attendant in Austria only requires further training, while the job in Germany includes three years of training.
