The association for physical exercises Klafeld-Geisweid 08 e. V. is a German football club from Geisweid in South Westphalia , a district of the city of Siegen . In the 2020/21 season, the first men's team will play in the Season 5 district league of the Westphalia Football and Athletics Association (FLVW).
The team had its most successful period in the pre-war years, towards the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, when the so-called princes were able to advance to the regional league , at that time the second-highest German division. From this, however, the VfL rose again after only one year of membership in the 1971/72 season .
history
The beginnings in Klafeld and Geisweid (1907 to 1927)
Grabbed by the general enthusiasm for football, the first football club was founded in Klafeld as early as 1907 . Under the name "Edelweiß" Klafeld the team played their first game against "Germania" Siegen. After differences within the Edelweiss-Elf it came to a dissolution after only one year, which gave the reason to found "Unity" Klafeld 08 . Five years later, another club was formed in Klafeld with the "Spiel und Sport" association in Klafeld -Geisweid . At the instigation of the then “Einigkeit” club manager Robert Schnautz, both clubs then merged to form the “Spielvereinigung” 08 Klafeld .
On April 28, 1908, a soccer team was founded on the Geisweid side with the “Sigambria” Geisweid sports club . In November 1913, those present decided at a general meeting to apply for admission to the West German Gaming Association , which was also approved a year later. Because of the First World War , the club's activities had to be stopped between 1914 and 1918. On May 3, 1919, it was resumed after a meeting at which more than 60 people were present. For the first championship round of the post-war period, which began on September 14, 1919, the Geisweider were divided into the A-class by the association, although they still had to compete in the C-class in the pre-war years. In addition to the senior team, the "Sigambrier" had six youth teams at that time, of which the A-youth was considered the best in the district. In the 1921/22 season, the senior team managed to win the championship in the A-class unbeaten. With a goal difference of 87: 6, they only recorded a single point division.
In 1919, those responsible in Geisweider tried for the first time to merge with the Klafelder competition, which ultimately failed due to the distrust in both camps. Therefore, the "Sigambrier" initially merged with the Geisweid gymnastics club and the 07 Siegen ball game club , but this was only to be short-lived.
Thereafter, discussions began again between the club management from Geisweid and Klafeld. After long and tough negotiations, the merger to form the major club Spielvereinigung 08 Klafeld-Geisweid was finally announced on January 23, 1927 .
The first years as a gaming association (1927 to 1946)
After the two clubs merged at the beginning of 1927, they built a powerful team that became A-class champions in the 1928/29 season. After the direct relegation, it took until the 1933/34 season before the next title win could be celebrated. On February 25, 1934, the club won the championship title of the district class. In the crucial promotion games to the district class, SpVg Olpe was beaten 3-1 and 1-0. In the following years the team established itself in the district class.
In the 1936/37 season, the players of the Spielvereinigung were even able to win the championship title in the Arnsberg district class, although the entire season was an important one with Wilhelm Bender , who sustained a serious knee injury in the training camp of the national team for the Olympic Games in Berlin Player had to be replaced. Nevertheless, the "princes" won 15 of the 22 games of the season and got 33:11 points and 83:45 goals. In the promotion games to the Westphalian Gauliga they failed with only one win (against the East Westphalian representative Arminia Bielefeld ) from three games. However, the team celebrated their biggest success of the season on August 16, 1936, when the German champions from 1933, Fortuna Düsseldorf , were defeated 2-1 in the Tschammerpokal , the forerunner of today's DFB Cup .

Exactly one week later, on August 23rd, VfL had to admit defeat 0: 6 goals in the following round at SV Waldhof Mannheim on their unusual grass pitch.
Due to the Second World War , after the successes of 1936, the club was initially quiet. In the summer of 1945, the club was one of the first in the South Westphalian region to start playing again. A year after the end of the war, the team started in the 1946/47 season in the Siegerland championship. In the decisive final game, SV Feudingen was beaten 2-1 and, by winning the district championship, they took part in the promotion games to the district class.
In the same year, after a meeting on January 9, 1946, the gymnastics community Friesen , which is still based in Geisweid, was accepted into the club. This is how the Klafeld-Geisweid 08 e. V. However, just a year later, both parties separated again. The gymnastics community is now called the Friesen Klafeld-Geisweid 1889 e. V. in the register of associations. The football department kept the new name despite the separation.
Rise to the top address in Siegerland (1946 to 1971)
At the beginning of the 1947/48 season, the Klafelder started again in the district class Siegerland, where they always found themselves in the front table regions. In the game year 1948/49 they won the championship in the district class, but failed in the promotion games. With the re-establishment of the regional league for the 1950/51 season, the team rose to the same position after a second place in the previous season and reached second place in the table in the first year of membership. In the following season it was only enough for seventh place, before a year later the way to the district class had to be started again after the end of the season in the state league, the quality of which had increased significantly due to the dissolution of the Westphalia league had been one of the relegation places.
After only one year in the district class, the direct rise was achieved with 56: 8 points and a goal difference of 129: 30. The team spent the following three seasons under coach Kurt Brosi again in the national league, with a 3-1 win against the local heroes and later German amateur champions Sportfreunde in the 1954/55 season on the local Schießberg . The team finished the season in seventh place in the table and remained undefeated at home. At the end of the 1956/57 season, the "princes" had to relegate back to the district class. It was not until 1963 before the spectators could marvel at regional league football in Geisweid again. As a newcomer to the regional league, he was promoted again in the first year, and so in the 1964/65 season under coach Joachim Jänisch , who had replaced Herbert Steuber at the beginning of the season, the first game in the Association of Westphalia, the top division of amateur football at the time , on. Due to the simultaneous relegation of the big local rival Sportfreunde Siegen from the Regionalliga , both teams now played there. The opponents in the new class turned out to be too strong for VfLer and so they relegated to the national league at the end of the season.
After the direct resurgence was initially missed, succeeded in the 1966/67 game year under the direction of coach Herbert Schäfer, the renewed promotion to the association league, where you met again on the Siegener Sportfreunde. In the following year the Schäfer protégés, after the relegation of the Sportfreunde in the previous year, were the only and highest-ranking representatives from today's Siegen-Wittgenstein district in the top amateur class. The Klafeld team finished eleventh in the table in the first year after promotion at the end of the season. On September 21, 1968, the former national coach Sepp Herberger visited the Klafelder at the home game against STV Horst-Emscher , which was won 4-0. They also played friendly matches against the then Regionalliga West champions Bayer 04 Leverkusen (final score: 2: 0) and Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 (1: 3).
Before the start of the fourth season in a row, the Tennenplatz of the Hofbach Stadium was inaugurated on August 1, 1970 . Against the reigning Regionalliga-West champions VfL Bochum a 2-1 win was achieved. In the first year on new territory, at the end of the Association League season 1970/71, the greatest success in the club's history was recorded. One rose to the regional league, at that time the second highest German division. The deciding game for the title of Westphalia champion on May 9, 1971 in front of 2,023 spectators in Hagen's Ischelandstadion against SVA Gütersloh , the winner of the Association League Season 1, was lost with 0: 1, but with the second place in the table, regardless of the promotion round promotion round behind the SVA Gütersloh, against which one away 0: lost and two at home a 1: reached 1 draw, and before Bayer 05 Uerdingen , against which one on home soil with 2: 1 won and in -Grotenburg Kampfbahn 2: 2 played a draw, the promotion was finally made perfect.

The regional league season (1971/72)
In the regional league season , despite the establishment of the VfL support group , well-known new signings such as Mohammad Reza Adelkhani , Horst Stockhausen and Hans Grieger and an average of 3818 spectators, which was very high in this class for the time, could not match the successes of previous years be linked. In particular, bad luck with injuries resulted in only four home wins (1-0 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen , 1-0 against VfR Neuss , 2-0 against SC Viktoria Köln and 2-0 against Preußen Münster ) as well as one away win at SpVgg Erkenschwick (4: 1) arrive. Even the dismissal of coach Werner Schumacher on November 18, 1971 and the associated new signing of Hennes Hoffmann could not change the fact that the "princes" at the end of the season with a balance of 14:54 points (5 wins, 4 draws, 25 Defeats) and a goal difference of 24:71.

The success at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s was primarily due to the then 1st Chairman - from 1965 to 1980 and 1983 - and later Honorary Chairman Hans Elbracht († October 25, 1997), who was also the authorized signatory at in Geisweid was still resident “ Deutsche Edelstahlwerke Specialty Steel ” and was able to find one or the other job for the players.
Between the Ober-, Verband- and Landesliga (1972 to 1985)
After relegation from the regional league in 1972, the Geisweider had to start the bitter way back to the regional league after another descent at the end of the 1973/74 season. During this time (October 13, 1974) they played a friendly match against Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt , which was clearly lost with 0: 9. Only after winning the championship title of the national league in 1978 was the leap back into the now fourth-class Westphalia Association, after the team narrowly failed twice as second in the table. There the Klafelder first established themselves again and ended five of the seven years in the upper half of the table before they had to relegate again in 1984/85. Probably the greatest successes during this time were the participation in the DFB Cup , but VfLer were eliminated both times in the first main round: 1980/81 on their own place against the then Hessian national division Rot-Weiss Frankfurt with 1: 2 and one year later with the amateurs of VfB Stuttgart even with 0: 4.
On October 10, 1981, there were crowd riots at the home game against Hasper SV . After physical attacks on the referee, stewards and police officers were required and the club was suspended for a game. In addition, the then honorary chairman, Hans Elbracht, had to pay a fine of DM 400 for alleged negative statements to the referee . The season ended in fifth place in the table. The season 1982/83 had a perfect start to the season, which was rewarded with the unofficial autumn championship. After internal quarrels and bad luck with injuries in the second half of the season, the decisive game came on the last day of the match against direct promotion competitor SV Langendreer 04 . With a 1: 5 defeat, the club finished the year in third place in the table. After a mixed season 1984/85 they came third from bottom. VfL unfortunately lost 3-2 on a neutral pitch in the Nattenberg stadium in Lüdenscheid in the deciding game for the fifth association league relegated against STV Horst-Emscher , who was third from bottom of the other season .

The Landesliga years, relegation and promotion (1985 to 2000)
The 1984/85 season was the club's last season so far. After the direct resurgence was clearly missed in the following season in the regional league, there was a great change in the summer of 1986. Ten players left the club, 16 new and mainly young players joined. The face of the team also changed significantly in the following two seasons. Not least because of a lack of financial means, the sporting success failed to materialize.
During the winter break of 1989/90, the club management signed Thomas Meichsner and Gerald Wagner from BSG Chemie Buna Schkopau, the first two newcomers from the GDR . But these could not prevent relegation to the district league at the end of the 1990/91 season. With a young team they rose again undefeated in the national league in 1993. After a few placements in the top third of the table, it seemed as if the team could firmly establish themselves there, but at the end of the 1999/2000 season the club rose again after seven years with just 14 points in the district league.
District league football in Hofbachtal (2000 to 2015)
Due to the bad financial situation of the club, the "princes" were no longer able to tie good-class players to the club, and so they just escaped on the last day of the 2002/03 season with a 2-0 home win against Germania Salchendorf the descent into the lowlands of the district league. From then on, the focus was mainly on young players and success returned at times. The following three years ended the Geisweider always in the upper half of the table. In the 2004/05 season they even won the runner-up after a brilliant return series. This was followed by midfield placements until 2011, before the team had to make their way to the district league A in 2015.
Relegations at the district level and return to the district league (since 2015)
The sporting downward trend had not yet come to an end, because after the team was able to end the 2015/16 season at least in the lower midfield, they found themselves in a relegation zone in summer 2017. With a strongly rejuvenated team, which started in the district league B after the personnel change in the summer, the immediate promotion to the A-district league took place. After two years there, in the 2019/20 season, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the team managed to return to the district league after a five-year abstinence as a result of an association decision using the ratio rule .
The club currently has two men's senior teams, an old men's department and eleven youth teams, from the A-youth to the Bambini.
History of the women's football division
The women's soccer department was added to the club in May 1972; in the years before that, it was a department within the company sports community of the city of Hüttental .
In the 1973/74 season, the team took part in a championship round for the first time and began under the direction of coach Olaf body in the district league. After a second place in the table in the 1975/76 season, which would have entitled the VfL women for the district league, they waived promotion. Only one year later, the sovereign win of the championship title of the district league succeeded and the women rose to the district league for the first time. In the first year, with a fifth place in the table, the qualification for the 1978/79 season newly created national league succeeded. After the direct relegation, the team reached fourth place in the table in the 1980/81 season; so it went back to the regional league, as this was increased because of the re-establishment of the women's association league. The state league was now the second highest Westphalian women's division.
After two years of membership, the team rose again from the district league, in which they again won the championship title after two years and was able to establish themselves in the state league by the end of the 1988/89 season. After relegation in the 1988/89 season they were again unbeaten champions of the district league a year later and once again made it to the state league.
In the following years, the team always occupied top places in the regional league, before the greatest success since the founding of the women's football department was achieved in the 1996/97 season under coach Anne Petri, the regional league championship and the associated promotion to the association league. In the 1997/98 season it was not only evident that the league was one size too big. The offspring, which had been very sparse for a long time, also made itself felt. The team was relegated at the end of the season and could no longer be reported for the next season because of the thinned player base. This ended the era of women's football at VfL after 27 years.
Stadion
The club has played its home games in the Hofbachstadion since 1970 . First they played for four years on the Tennenplatz before the natural grass pitch was inaugurated on September 15, 1974 . The facility has around 10,000 seats, making it the second largest facility in the Siegen city area. It is also one of only two natural grass sports fields in the city and the only one that is surrounded by a tartan track .
The two straights in front of the grandstands offer the spectators standing steps with breakwaters, the two curves are mostly green. A few years ago, part of the standing steps on one of the straights was renewed. There are also a few rows with screwed-on seats.
In over 35 years the facility has become quite ailing and in need of renovation. One of the few investments made by the city in the summer of 1981 was the installation of a loudspeaker system including a speaker booth, which was shut down again after a short time because the permissible noise level was exceeded, and the renovation of the running track in the mid-1990s. As part of the upcoming 100th anniversary, a roof was installed on one side of the grandstand in January 2007. A tennis court is attached to the lawn, with artificial turf since summer 2008 .
During the Regionalliga season 1971/72, the Leimbachstadion in Siegen, which was, ironically enough, the home ground of the big rival at the time. Before and afterwards they played on the traditional Schießberg until the construction of the facility in Hofbachtal.
