Carspar Bartholin the Younger

Caspar Thomeson Bartholin (also Caspar Bartholin Secundus or Caspar Bartholin the Younger ; born September 10, 1655 in Copenhagen ; † June 11, 1738 ibid) was a Danish anatomist . Bartholin was the first to describe the Bartholin's gland ( lat. - anat. ;, Large vestibule - gland '), which is also referred to in human anatomy after him as "Bartholin gland" or "Bartholin'sche gland".

Life

De ovariis mulierum et generationis historia epistola anatomica , 1678

He was the son of the anatomist and scientist Thomas Bartholin and grandson of the theologian and anatomist Caspar Bartholin of the same name . The latter is sometimes mistakenly attributed to the discovery of the Bartholin's gland.

Caspar Bartholin began studying medicine in 1671 and was appointed professor of philosophy by King Christian V as early as 1674, at the age of 19 . After his appointment, he went on a three-year study trip through Europe, during which he worked for the Parisian anatomist Joseph Guichard Duverney (1648–1730), among others . Together with this he found Bartholin's gland in a cow. On his return to Copenhagen, he taught as a professor of physics and anatomy at the University of Copenhagen , where he was rector three times. In 1678 he received a doctorate in medicine from his father, who was rector of the university several times.

In addition to the description of the glandulae vestibulares majores of the female genitalia in 1677, Bartholin described the execution course of the glandula sublingualis in 1684 . Both structures were named after him.

Around 1700 Caspar Bartholin gave up teaching at the university and began to be interested in politics. In 1709 he became a judge at the Supreme Court, in 1719 Attorney General and in 1724 Ministerial Counselor for Finance.

Since 1699 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .
