Patrick Helmes (born March 1, 1984 in Cologne ) is a former German soccer player and today's coach .

Career as a player

youth

Patrick Helmes was born in 1984 as the son of soccer player Uwe Helmes in Cologne and grew up in the Freudenberg district of Alchen in Siegerland . The center forward spent his youth in football in Siegerland; there he played for TuS Alchen, for SpVgg Bürbach and for Sportfreunde Siegen . In 1997 Helmes switched to the youth team of the then Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln . In 2000, Helmes was sorted out from the club in his hometown because he was not physically robust enough. Therefore, he returned to his home in the Siegerland region in the summer of 2000 and was again active for the youth of the sports fans from Siegen. He played there until 2003.

After three years in youth and a few appearances in the second team, Helmes moved up to the first team of the winning countries. In the 2003/04 season , however, he came only to a few short appearances. It was only in the following season that he developed into a top performer at Sportfreunde Siegen. He scored a total of 21 goals, making him the top scorer in the Regionalliga Süd. He thus contributed to the promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2005 . However, he had already signed with his former club, the then Bundesliga promoted 1. FC Köln, before the end of the season.

1. FC Cologne

He then moved to his old youth club for 200,000 euros. There he was primarily intended for the position of the right winger . On the seventh match day of the 2005/06 season he scored his first Bundesliga goal in his only second Bundesliga appearance for FC in their 2-1 defeat in Leverkusen. In the first season at Cologne, he was not able to assert himself and was mostly only substituted or not played at all. Only at the end of the season he was allowed to play in three games from the start. In the 2005/06 season he was relegated to the second Bundesliga with 1. FC Köln.

In the first five games of the 2006/07 season , Helmes showed good performances ( average kicker score 1.90) and scored seven goals. On September 25, 2006 he suffered a metatarsal fracture in the game against Rot-Weiss Essen . Despite the injury, he still scored his 7th goal of the season. The injury, which according to the first assessment of the doctors should result in at least an eight-week break, was so serious that Helmes had to pause for more than four months and only celebrated his comeback at the away game in Braunschweig on February 9, 2007. On January 31, 2007, Helmes announced that he had signed two contracts with Bayer 04 Leverkusen - one that will apply from July 2007 and one that will apply from July 2008. At this point in time, Helmes had a contract with 1. FC Köln until the summer of 2007, although Cologne had the option of extending it until 2008. Cologne took up this option, so that Helmes was tied to FC until 2008. An offer from Leverkusen to sign him against payment of a transfer fee as early as the summer of 2007 was rejected by the Cologne club management with a view to the importance of Helmes for Cologne's plans for promotion.

Cologne's coach Christoph Daum appointed Helmes team captain for the 2007/08 season , but before the game against Kickers Offenbach on matchday 9, the captain's armband was handed over to Matthias Scherz after a meeting between coach Christoph Daum and Helmes . In 33 completed games during this season, he scored 17 goals and provided six assists for scoring. At the end of the season, the 3rd place was achieved and so the promotion with Cologne in the Bundesliga .

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

In January 2007, the move from Helmes to Bayer 04 Leverkusen on July 1, 2008 was finally perfect. There he ousted Theofanis Gekas from the starting XI, who had fallen short of expectations. Helmes played his first competitive game in the DFB Cup on August 10, 2008, when he made a significant contribution to the 3-2 win against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen with a goal . Less than a week later he made his debut for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga . He got off to a good start in the 2008/09 season , scoring at least one goal on each of the first six game days - with the exception of the 3rd game day - and Helmes even scored three goals in the 4-0 win over Hannover 96 . Helmes finished the season with Bayer in 9th place in the table and scored 21 goals in his debut season. On May 30, 2009 he lost the DFB Cup final in Berlin against Werder Bremen with 0: 1.

Shortly after the end of the season, Helmes tore a cruciate ligament while playing soccer with friends . This was considered bad news for Bayer Leverkusen. The newly signed Eren Derdiyok , however, performed so well that Helmes was mostly only used as a substitute after his recovery. In his first UEFA Europa League game , Helmes scored three of the four goals in the 4-0 win over Rosenborg Trondheim .

In the following season Helmes could not regain his regular place and although he scored five goals in the first half of the season, he was mostly substituted on or off in his eleven inserts. Jupp Heynckes pointed out to Helmes that a player who listened to him usually got better. Shortly before the end of the transfer period in winter 2010/11, Helmes moved to Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg .

VfL Wolfsburg

Helmes at VfL Wolfsburg (2012)

In his third game for VfL Wolfsburg, Helmes scored his first goal against SC Freiburg on the 23rd match day of the 2010/11 season , which Wolfsburg finally lost 2-1. It should be the last goal for him in another five missions. He could not establish himself for the rest of the season with the Wolfsburg stuck in the relegation battle, who ensured relegation without his help.

After two goals in the first game of the new season against 1. FC Köln , he was used until the eighth matchday in early October. On November 17, Helmes was demoted to the second team of the Regionalliga Nord due to the poor performance in the previous games and played his only game in this one day later. After a change that was canceled during the winter break, he was allowed to train with the first team again before he was back in the Wolfsburg starting line-up for the first time in five months on February 25, 2012 and scored a goal. As a result, he did not miss a single game until the end of the season and became the absolute top striker for the first time at VfL with ten goals in ten games and several doubles. For a long time, two years after his last international match, he was considered a great candidate for the German squad for the 2012 European Championship .

In the following season , trainer and managing director Felix Magath then sold Helmes' competitor Mario Mandžukić to FC Bayern Munich in order to be able to concentrate permanently on the revived helmet. In preparation for the season, however, Helmes again suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in the test match against English champions Manchester City and was unable to play in the first half of the Bundesliga, so that he missed the great opportunity to finally establish himself as the number one striker. After a six-month break, he made his comeback in the Wolves jersey on February 15, 2013 in the game against FC Bayern when he was substituted on in the 75th minute. In contrast to the previous season, however, this return was unsuccessful: Only five game days later, on March 31, he was reinstated. Parallel to his only four Bundesliga appearances, he also played four games with the second team.

Return to 1. FC Köln

After Helmes had not played in the Bundesliga at the beginning of the 2013/14 season and had to play another four games with the second team in August, he switched back to the then second division club 1. FC Köln shortly before the end of the transfer period . Helmes signed a contract that was valid until June 30, 2016. On September 16 (7th matchday) he scored the 1-0 in his first game in a 4-0 win against Energie Cottbus and prepared the 2-0 for Anthony Ujah . On December 13, 2013, he scored two goals in a 3-1 win over Dynamo Dresden . His volley to make it 1-0 was voted goal of the month . At the end of the 2013/14 season , he was promoted to the Bundesliga with 1. FC Köln and was one of the main culprits thanks to his twelve goals. In the decisive 3-1 home win against VfL Bochum on matchday 31, he scored to 2-1.

At the end of July 2014, Helmes suffered cartilage damage to his hip in the Cologne training camp . Due to this injury, he did not play a single competitive game during the 2014/15 season and ended his active career at the end of the season.

National team

Patrick Helmes played from 2005 to 2006 in the U-21 team of the DFB . As part of the European Championship qualification, he scored two goals for 2-0 and 3-0 against Romania in the German U-21 selection on September 5, 2006; the game ended 5-1.

On March 25, 2007, the then second division team was called up and used for the first time in the A-squad of the German national team for the test match against Denmark , which took place on March 28 in the Wedaustadion in Duisburg . Helmes was appointed to the provisional squad for the European Football Championship 2008 by national coach Joachim Loew on May 16, 2008 , but not included in the final squad.

On November 18, 2008 Helmes scored his first international goal with the goal to make it 1-1 when the German team lost 2-1 to England at the Olympiastadion Berlin . He scored his second goal on August 11, 2010 in the first game after the 2010 World Cup against Denmark to make it 2-0 in the 73rd minute. In this game he made his comeback in the national team after a long injury and a form crisis that had cost him the World Cup in South Africa. After the second half of the 2011/12 season he was considered a candidate for the 2012 European Championship, but was not considered by national coach Löw as in 2008 and 2010.

Career as a coach

Physically forced to retire early, Helmes continued to work for the club. In the 2015/16 season he was assistant coach of the second team (U21) of 1. FC Cologne in the Regionalliga West . After head coach Stefan Emmerling switched to SC Paderborn 07 during the season , Helmes was appointed interim coach of the second team until the winter break. On December 22nd, he was appointed head coach of the second Cologne team.

In March 2017, Helmes' contract term was extended to summer 2021. Under the impression of a heart attack that assistant trainer Uwe Fecht had suffered in his presence, Helmes gave up his commitment on September 26, 2017.

On December 1, 2017, Helmes was assistant coach of the third division club FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt until the end of the 2017/18 season . His contract with 1. FC Köln , which ran until 2021, was then suspended.

From the 2018/19 season he worked at Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the coaching staff of the youth department. For the 2020/21 season he was coaching assistant coach of Zvonimir Soldo at the Austrian Bundesliga club FC Admira Wacker Mödling , and he was also coach of the third-rate amateurs of Admira.
