Matthias Scherz (born December 14, 1971 in Rotenburg / Wümme ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

The right wing striker , who was characterized by his speed, played for the amateur club Rot-Weiß Scheeßel until 1994, when he moved to FC St. Pauli at the age of 22 . In the first two years he first played for the local amateur department. In the 1996/97 season he made the leap to the Bundesliga team at FC St. Pauli. After relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga , Scherz established himself as a regular player in the following two seasons.

In the 1999/2000 season Scherz moved to the then second division club 1. FC Köln , where he was also a regular player and was promoted to the Bundesliga with the club. In the 2002/03 season, which led to promotion to the Bundesliga, he managed to more than triple his goal rate, which had been the norm to date, with a yield of 18 goals.

This was followed by relegation in the 2003/04 Bundesliga season. In the subsequent 2004/05 season of promotion, he was after Lukas Podolski with 11 goals second best scorer.

After 1. FC Köln relegated back to the second division at the end of the 2005/06 season, Scherz extended his contract for another two years.

On February 25, 2007, in the game against SC Paderborn 07 , Scherz tore the syndesmosis ligament in his right leg and was therefore out for the rest of the season. Despite the serious injury, Scherz was the most successful Joker goalscorer of the season (7 goals in 13 substitutions).

Matthias Scherz made his last appearance for 1. FC Köln on July 24, 2009, when Lukas Podolski played the game against FC Bayern Munich .

Scherz was entrusted with the task of player development and career planning in the junior division at 1. FC Köln until the end of the 2010/2011 season. In the course of a restructuring of the club under the new sports director Volker Finke , his expiring contract was not extended. Scherz then filed a lawsuit (file number 6 Ca 4142/11) for reinstatement at the Cologne Labor Court. Joke attorney argued that the ex-professional had the status of a permanent employee after twelve years at 1. FC Köln. Joke would therefore be entitled to a severance payment. At the end of November 2011, the dispute between Scherz and 1. FC Köln was ended. Club and ex-player reached an out-of-court settlement.

From January 2012 Matthias Scherz wrote the column "Seitenwechsel 2.0" for the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger . Since August 2012 he has been supported by Herbert Neumann on a weekly basis . In terms of content, the column dealt with current events at 1. FC Köln.

In December 2012, SC Fortuna Köln signed Matthias Scherz as a player, who at that time had been interning with Fortuna for several weeks as part of his coaching training. Scherz ended his work as a columnist for the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger after he started working for Fortuna Cologne. Herbert Neumann has since written the column alone again until it was completely discontinued in February 2013.

In the summer of 2013 he finally ended his active career. The trained electrician Scherz has since been working in sales for the GC Group , an association for wholesalers in the field of building technology and electrical appliances.
