Arua is a city in northwest Uganda near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo with around 55,600 inhabitants (2005 estimate). It is the capital of the Arua district of the same name and a Catholic bishopric .

There is a regional airport in the city with multiple daily scheduled flights from several Ugandan domestic airlines to Entebbe . Arua is the destination and starting point of all intercity bus connections from / to Kampala in the north-west of the country. As an economic center, the region is home to many refugees from Sudan and the DR Congo and is home to several non-governmental organizations . The neighboring region of Aru in the northeast of the DR Congo also obtains a large part of all goods via the city of Arua and can only be reached by (land) vehicles from Uganda.
