Bottom of the table

The 2005/06 Bundesliga was the 43rd season of the top German division in men's football. The German champions were FC Bayern Munich . The season started on August 5, 2005 with FC Bayern Munich's game against Borussia M'gladbach and ended on May 13, 2006. For the first time, a team won the double for two years in a row - that is, the championship and the DFB Cup. It was also the fourth double in a row, also unique in the Bundesliga. It was also the first season since the 1990/91 season that no club from the former GDR played.

Season overview

With the exception of the first and the ninth matchday, FC Bayern was in first place in the table without interruption and secured the championship title on the penultimate matchday. In the end, Bayern had five points ahead of Werder Bremen. The Bremen team won 2-1 on the last matchday at Hamburger SV, which had been second up until then, and took second place themselves, which entitles them to participate directly in the UEFA Champions League . As cup winners Bayern Munich qualified as German champions for the Champions League, runner-up cup winners Eintracht Frankfurt were allowed to take part in the UEFA Cup the following season.

While MSV Duisburg and 1. FC Köln were already relegated before the end of the season, there was a direct duel between VfL Wolfsburg and 1. FC Kaiserslautern on the last match day . The Wolfsburg had one point ahead of Kaiserslautern, which they could defend with a 2-2. Thus, the 1. FC Kaiserslautern rose for the second time after 1996 from the Bundesliga.

In addition to Hamburger SV, which settled in the top of the Bundesliga, Arminia Bielefeld and Mainz 05 , who stayed in the Bundesliga, although they had previously been considered clear relegation candidates, and especially during the season, 1. FC Nürnberg surprised positively . After the twelfth matchday, the club was still in last place in the table, under the newly engaged coach Hans Meyer , was the fourth most successful team in the second half of the season and finished 8th in front of VfB Stuttgart . VfL Wolfsburg, in particular, surprised negatively, having aimed for a place in an international competition, but only narrowly escaped relegation in the end - with the lowest number of points that has been able to keep relegation since the introduction of the three-point rule. After being taken over by coach Klaus Augenthaler , the team slipped from 13th to 15th place.
