The Scottish Premier League was played for the eighth time in 2005/06 . It was also the 109th edition of the highest soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 2005/06 season, 12 clubs competed against each other in a total of 38 matchdays. Each team played once at home and away against every other team in the first round. After that, the league was divided into two halves, in which the teams play against each other again. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
Celtic Glasgow won the Scottish Championship for the 40th time in the club's history. The Bhoys qualified as champions for the 2006/07 Champions League season . Runner-up Heart of Midlothian also played in the Champions League because of Scotland's improved position in the UEFA five-year standings . The defeated cup finalists , FC Gretna from the Second Division , and the third-placed Glasgow Rangers qualified for the UEFA Cup .
