Stilijan Aljoschew Petrow ( Bulgarian Стилиян Альошев Петров ; born July 5, 1979 in Montana ) is a former Bulgarian football player .
Career
He started his career at PFK Montana , for which he played from 1995. Petrov played for CSKA Sofia from 1997 to 1999.
The midfielder was the captain of the Bulgarian national team and since 2006 has also been the captain of his employer Aston Villa. Petrow moved from his home club CSKA Sofia to Celtic Glasgow in the summer of 1999 for the record sum of 4.5 million euros . There he soon advanced to become a regular and eventually a leading player and even team captain. His greatest successes in Glasgow were the Scottish Championships in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2006 as well as the respective Scottish Cup victory in 2001 and 2004. He also won four editions of the Scottish League Cup in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2006.
In August 2006, Petrov moved for a basic transfer fee of six and a half million pounds sterling - which could grow to over eight million if successful - to the English club Aston Villa , where he signed a four-year contract. He succeeded his previous coach Martin O'Neill , who had also been hired for the 2006/07 season in Birmingham .
His greatest international success was his participation with Bulgaria in the 2004 European Football Championship in Portugal .
Stilijan Petrov was made an honorary citizen of his hometown (Montana) in 2006.
illness
After the league game against Arsenal on March 23, 2012, Petrov complained of fever and nausea. Acute leukemia was diagnosed a week later . On May 9, 2013, Petrov announced the end of his career. He was subsequently inducted into the club 's Hall of Fame .
Petrov has now been cured of his illness and trained again with the professional Aston Villa team in preparation for the summer of 2016/17 .
