Volkhardt Germer

Volkhardt Germer (born May 9, 1944 in Weimar ) is a former German local politician . From 1994 to 2006 he was Lord Mayor of Weimar.

Life and work

After completing his vocational training as a concrete skilled worker with a high school diploma in 1962, he studied teaching for German and sport at the Zwickau University of Education until 1967 . From 1975 to 1978 Germer was a special candidate at the Pedagogical University of Potsdam . It was here that he obtained his doctorate in 1978 (Dissertation A). Germer then joined the school administration of the city of Weimar and was city school councilor in Weimar from 1982 to 1987.

From 1991 to 1993 he was managing director of Aluguß GmbH Weimar .

Volkhardt Germer is married to Mrs. Roswitha and has two children. Since 2004 he has been an honorary member of the German Language Association .

Before 1990, Germer was a member of the Weimar City Council for the SED and was the deputy city school councilor in the field of public education and from 1982 as the city school councilor - i.e. with responsibility for all kindergartens and schools in Weimar and for their employees . From 1990 to 1994 he was a member of the first freely elected city council of Weimar.

Public offices

In 1987 Germer was appointed Deputy Mayor of Weimar. From November 1989 he was the acting Lord Mayor, since Gerhard Baumgärtel moved to Berlin as Minister . This made Germer the first SED mayor after several decades of CDU politicians in this position . His successor (from June 1990) was also a member of the CDU.

In 1994 Germer was elected Lord Mayor of Weimar as a now non-party candidate. In the runoff election he was able to prevail with 53.9% of the votes against the incumbent Mayor Klaus Büttner ( CDU ) from Fulda . In 2000 Germer was confirmed in office with a turnout of only 45.1% with 60.9% of the votes cast. Germer did not run for the mayor election on May 7, 2006.
