Franz Kirchner (born April 20, 1919 in Mährisch-Trübau ; † April 25, 2003 in Brehme ) was a German political scientist , party functionary of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), a member of the GDR People's Chamber and Lord Mayor of Weimar .

Life

Kirchner came from a middle-class family in the Moravian part of Czechoslovakia . Mährisch-Trübau was predominantly inhabited by families of German descent. His father was an employee . After attending elementary school he obtained in 1939 at the high school , the university entrance . During this time of the occupation of the CSR he began to study economics at a Prague university in 1939 , which he could not continue because of his conscription to the armed forces .

When the Nazi regime was over, he had to leave the country of his birth and came to Mecklenburg first . Here he joined the CDU. With this mandate he was appointed head of the prices department in the district of Schönberg and held this position until 1950. During this time he qualified by attending the college for finance in Königs Wusterhausen . In 1950 he began studying at the Academy for Political Science and Law in Potsdam and at the same time worked as a consultant at the Schwerin State Finance Directorate . In 1952 he was sent by his party to Thuringia , where he had to take over the position of deputy chairman of the local council in Bad Salzungen . In the local elections he was elected with the mandate of his party as a member of the Salzunger Kreisag . At the same time he got a seat as a member of the CDU parliamentary group of the People's Chamber, which he held with a break of four years until 1986. There he worked in two committees: the committee for the work of the local people's representations and the committee for foreign affairs. During this time, the CDU, impressed by his efficiency, had him delegated to the main board as a member. Since 1970 he has also been a member of the Presidium , the top management group of the GDR CDU.

In the meantime, Kirchner had passed his state examination as a state scientist at the Berlin University of Economics in 1960 . In 1961 he took over the role of CDU district chairman for the Erfurt district , which he held until 1970. At the same time he was a member of the district assembly of Erfurt.

In his position as Lord Mayor of Weimar from 1970 to 1982, Kirchner became known beyond the borders of the country thanks to the city's international reputation. As a representative of the classic city, he received numerous delegations and individuals who visited the city for congresses and scientific seminars . Towards the end of his term of office, a cross-border partner relationship with the French city ​​of Blois was initiated in 1981, when the local mayor Pierre Sudreau and Franz Kirchner signed a declaration of friendship, which became the basis for the commencement of a city ​​partnership on February 18, 1995 .

Kirchner retired on October 21, 1982.
