Gerhard Baumgärtel

Gerhard Baumgärtel (born November 25, 1931 in Reumtengrün near Auerbach / Vogtl. , † July 27, 1997 in Weimar ) was a German politician , Lord Mayor of Weimar and Minister for Construction and Housing in the Modrow government .

After an apprenticeship as a carpenter (1946–49) Baumgärtel studied at the Technical College for Applied Arts in Erfurt and from 1954 to 1960 at the Weimar University of Architecture and Construction (HAB). After working as an architect and project manager at VEB Polygraph Leipzig, he was a research assistant at the HAB from 1962 to 1969, senior assistant from 1969 to 1974 and, after additional studies at the Technical University of Budapest, lecturer until 1982 , then an honorary professor . In 1965 he received his doctorate at the HAB Weimar with the work on interior design in compact, skylight-free industrial buildings with special consideration of the basic occupational hygiene requirements . In 1969 he completed his habilitation here with the work Investigations into the design of the working environment in industrial buildings - A contribution to technical-scientific design principles and their methodical application in the project planning process to increase the structural utility value requirements for industrial buildings .

Baumgärtel joined the GDR CDU in 1969 . Since 1977 he has been a member of the main board, since 1984 in the presidium of the main board. From 1982 to 1989 he was Lord Mayor of Weimar, from 1986 to March 1990 a member of the People's Chamber (member of the Committee for National Defense) and from November 18, 1989 to March 17, 1990, Minister for Building in the government of Hans Modrow .

Baumgärtel was employed as an architect until 1995.
