Fritz Behr (born February 2, 1881 in Leipzig , † October 4, 1974 in Weimar ) was a German teacher , local politician ( SPD / SED ) and chairman of the German Shakespeare Society .

Life

Fritz Behr attended elementary school , obtained his university entrance qualification and completed a degree in pedagogy . In 1903 he became a doctor of philosophy doctorate . From 1908 to 1933 he worked as a teacher in Weimar until he was dismissed from school service by the Nazi rulers. After that he secured his livelihood through employment as an unskilled worker a. a. at the Weimar freight yard.

After the end of the First World War , he joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in March 1919 and, with her mandate, was a city ​​councilor in Weimar from 1925 to 1933 . He was also a member of the district executive committee of his party and the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold .

In September 1939 he was briefly imprisoned. He was arrested again in August 1944 during the " Operation Grid " and was imprisoned in Buchenwald concentration camp until April 1945 . Behr was one of the signatories of the Buchenwald Manifesto .

After the liberation , he served as Lord Mayor of Weimar from May 1 to November 5, 1945 . He then moved to the State Office for National Education as a consultant for higher education . Behr became a member of the SED, but left his office at his own request in 1948 and then worked as a contract teacher.

Since the 1950s he was chairman of the German Shakespeare Society.
