About this picture

Brehme is a municipality in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia . It belongs to the administrative community Lindenberg / Eichsfeld .

geography

Brehme im Eichsfeld , more precisely in Untereichsfeld, is located in an elongated valley on the northern slope of the Ohm Mountains at the foot of the Sonnenstein . The area is characterized by forests and meadows with hiking trails to the ruins and pond in Wildungen, to Braunen Bühl, to Sonnenstein and through the Solbachtal to Fuhrbach and Duderstadt .

history

The first documentary mention of the place as a gift from Count von Lutterberg to the Lords of Westernhagen took place in 1312. During the Thirty Years' War Brehme was destroyed several times, in 1623 by the troops of "Tollen Christian", then by the Swedes. From 1749 to 1753, the probably first church was built in Brehme. In the 18th century, Brehme developed into a craft village. The most common occupations were brickworkers, carpenters, forest workers, migrant workers, musicians and peddlers. When the potash works near Bischofferode was founded in 1909 , many Brehmer men also found permanent employment there. Around 1930 Brehme was one of the most child-rich villages in Eichsfeld, each family had an average of 5.5 children, some families at that time even had twelve children.

Brehme was occupied by the US Army on April 10, 1945 . The previous artillery fire killed two women and damaged numerous buildings.

In July 1945 the place was occupied by Soviet occupation soldiers. Brehme was difficult to reach for visitors from outside due to its location on the zone border, which later became the inner-German border. From 1953 to 1956 the church was extended. The ten-class POS " Bertolt Brecht " was opened in the village in 1980 ; the catchment area of this school included the villages of Ecklingerode, Wehnde and Tastungen.

Noble family von Brehme

A noble family von Brehme is mentioned for the first time in the 13th century and was probably related to the von Wildungen family . The following members of the noble family are known:

  • Theodorich von Breme (1364), dies in Walkenried monastery
  • Magdalena von Brehme (1430), nun in Teistungenburg monastery
  • Albrecht von Brehme (1436), feudal estate in Duderstadt.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In the silver shield, divided by a blue wavy bar, a red overturned point above, which is covered with a silver six-spoke wheel, below a red point, which is covered with a silver oak leaf."

The blue wave bar symbolizes the two source areas belonging to the local corridor and the river of the same name that flows from Brehme to Duderstadt and then flows into the Hahle. The silver six-spoke wheel symbolizes the longstanding membership in the Archdiocese of Mainz . Finally, the silver oak leaf embodies the wooded surroundings and the oak as a typical tree population (hence the expression “Brehmer acorn” typical of Brehme). It also gives a clear indication of the location of the place in Eichsfeld .
