location

Fretterode is located about 10 kilometers southwest of Heilbad Heiligenstadt in the west of the Eichsfeld district. The local situation is in a trough-like depression between the hills of the Upper Eichsfeld with the Röhrsberg (468.1 m) and the Kahlenberg (408.1 m) in the north and the ridge of high mountain with the Riegelsberg (391.2 m) to the south . The village is connected to federal road 80 south of Hohengandern via the state road 1002 . Neighboring towns are Lindewerra and Wahlhausen in the south-west of the Werra Valley , Gerbershausen in the north-west, Schönhagen in the north and Dietzenrode-Vatterode in the east.

history

Fretterode was first mentioned in a deed of donation in 1089 as Fritheuuarderoth . In this document, Abbot Thietmar of the Helmarshausen monastery confirms to the same that he has given a noble lady named Lucia a village, including a church and three servants, Nanthelm, Everhard and Rotheger, with all rights of use regarding the place. In an addendum to the document there is a confirmation of the donation by the Archbishop of Mainz Adalbert I. However, the document is a forgery that was made in the late 12th century or at the beginning of the 13th century. The authenticity of the content of the document cannot be doubted, however, as the same handover is also attested in a Helmarshäusen official book from the last quarter of the 11th century and the first quarter of the 12th century.

In the small town there is a Catholic and Protestant church, both of which are consecrated to the apostles Peter and Paul . The Protestant church in the southeast of the town is enclosed by walls and is located on a terrace. In the west and south of the church there is a depression in front of the wall. The massive tower still shows a defensive face today. The Catholic Church on the opposite edge of the village lies on a mountain spur. According to the church separation in the following centuries, there was also a Catholic and a Protestant school here.

For many centuries the village was owned by the von Hanstein family , who also built a representative manor house there in 1718. From 1802 to 1806 and from 1813 to 1945 the village belonged to Prussia , from 1815 until its absorption in the Eichsfeld district in 1994 it was part of the Heiligenstadt district .
