Gernrode is a municipality in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia . It belongs to the Eichsfeld-Wipperaue administrative community . The fields of the village are among the most productive in the Eichsfeld district . In 2015, Gernrode celebrated its 650th anniversary.
geography
Gernrode is located in the Obereichsfeld in the southern Harz foreland . It lies on both sides of the Wipper River, framed by the Dün and Ohm Mountains, in the middle of the Eichsfeld basin.
history
The place is likely to have been founded between the 8th and 12th centuries, as indicated by the ending -rode . The first written mention as Germenroth was in 1267. The village was administered at this time by the Harburg Office and later by the Harburg-Worbis Office. The relocation of the Wipper in the Middle Ages made it possible to set up three mills within the local area. From 1586 Germenrode and Kirchworbis temporarily formed a common parish. In 1632 the Weimar troops burned down most of the houses and the old church during the Thirty Years' War . The new Catholic St. Stephen's Church from 1654 (expanded in 1932) with its baroque altar is one of the largest and is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Eichsfeld. Church registers have been kept since 1662. The population was reduced by war and the plague in 1656, 382. The place recovered again with influx from the surrounding later desert. In 1802 Gernrode came with the Principality of Eichsfeld to Prussia and temporarily to the Kingdom of Westphalia during the Napoleonic Wars . In the 18th century the place experienced an economic boom due to the flax cultivation, which was later immortalized in the municipality's coat of arms. In 1810, 820 people lived in Gernrode. In 1867, the town was granted for the construction of the railway line Nordhausen - Arenshausen ( . Railway line Halle-Hann Munden ) one of the three stations of the Eichsfeld, which, however, later due to confusion with Gernrode (Harz) in Niederorschel has been renamed. During a ceremony on December 9, 2007, the station was renamed Gernrode-Niederorschel when the timetable changed . In 1878 the school was rebuilt and later the great hall was built. After hand-weaving and bleaching of cloth as a result of industrialization, the residents found work in the plywood and mechanical weaving mills near the train station and in the cigar factories. Today Gernrode is one of the largest towns in the Eichsfeld district .
coat of arms
Blazon : "Azure, a silver occupied with a blue flax plant oblique Links bar, above a silver Hochkreuz, down a silver mill wheel."
The stylized flax plant is supposed to symbolize the previously economically formative cultivation and processing of the flax up to the linen cloth. The Passion Cross symbolizes the deeply rooted faith of the residents. The mill wheel stands for the three mills in town.
