Rolf Berend (born October 1, 1943 in Gernrode / Eichsfeld ) is a German politician ( CDU ).

Life and work

After graduating from high school , Berend studied music education and German at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the University of Leipzig , which he completed in 1966 as a graduate teacher . He then worked as a teacher until 1990 . He is married and has three children.

Political party

Berend joined the CDU in 1974 and was a member of the executive boards of the CDU regional association Thuringia and the CDU district association Eichsfeld from 1990 . Since 1992 he has also been chairman of the regional committee for Europe and European policy spokesman for the CDU in Thuringia. He has been a member of the municipal council of his home town of Gernrode since 1989 and was a member of the GDR's first freely elected People's Chamber from March to October 1990 .

MP

After initially serving as an MP with observer status from 1991 to 1994 , Berend was elected a full member of the European Parliament in 1994 and, since 1996, deputy chairman for regional policy of the EPP / ED Group. Berend has also been a member of the EPP / ED Group Bureau since 1999 and was Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Regional Development. Berend was also a member of the delegation to the ACP- EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly .

Social offices

After he was regional chairman of the European Union in Thuringia from 1993 , Berend has been its honorary chairman since 2002. Berend was also a member of the Europa-Union parliamentary group European Parliament. Berend has been a member of the Central Committee of German Catholics since 2004 . On February 13, 2001, he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .
