About this picture

Salmtal is a municipality in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate . In terms of population, it is the largest municipality in the Wittlich-Land association . Salmtal is designated as a basic center according to state planning .

geography

The community is located in the southern Eifel and there in the Wittlich valley in the Salm valley . The Burgberg rises to the north of the community, and the Kellerberg to the west. The A 1 federal motorway runs east of Salmtal and the A 60 to the north . Salmtal is also on the Moselle route , the Koblenz - Trier railway line .

The municipality of Salmtal is divided into the districts Dörbach and Salmrohr. The residential area Auf der Huf belongs to the Dörbach district ; to the district Salmrohr the residential areas Alter Bahnhof Salmrohr, Birkenhof, Josefshof, Kapellenhof and Tannenhof.

With the designation of new building areas since 2000, both districts along the L 141 are slowly growing together.

The Bendersbach flows through the Dörbach district. This flows into the Mühlengraben, a tributary of the Salm.

Neighboring communities (clockwise from the north) are: Altrich , Klausen , Sehlem , Heckenmünster , Dodenburg and Dreis .

history

Although there are Roman settlement finds from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD in the municipality, the first written mention of the place name Salmrohr as Rore bei Seleheim (see also Sehlem ) was not made until the year 1007. In 1250 the place name Dörbach was first mentioned mentioned in writing as Derinbach (arid brook). What was meant was probably today's Bendersbach, which shapes the place.

From 1794 both places were under French rule , in 1815 they were assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna .

During the Second World War, the railway line and especially the railway bridge over the Salm were the target of air raids. Since 1999 - in connection with evacuations - at least five duds from this period had to be defused by the ordnance disposal service.

Since 1946, both places were part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate . On June 7, 1969, the municipality Salmtal was formed from the municipalities Salmrohr and Dörbach as part of a regional reform.
