history
Even the Romans used the strategic location of the square by building a fortress here. A Roman fortification was the forerunner of the later castle. The complex was probably destroyed by the Franks around 412 .
In the Middle Ages, Starkenburg was the residence of the County of Sponheim for the rear county since 1125 ; In 1350 it was replaced by the newly built Grevenburg . The Sponheim family appears on the Moselle with Count Meginhard von Sponheim in a document in Enkirch in 1125. The first documented mention of the castle as "Starkenberg" in a Trier property register is from 1200.
The castle became famous in the 14th century through the courageous and energetic Countess Loretta , the young widow of Count Heinrich II. Von Sponheim . Their great adversary was the important Archbishop of Trier and Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg , who would have liked to bring the disturbing foreign body of the Sponheim County in the electoral territory under his rule. Countess Loretta, disrespectful and courageous, had the great Baldwin captured in 1328 during a boat trip on the Moselle and locked him in honorary detention at her fortress Starkenburg. Neither the emperor's threats nor the pope's curse could induce the young, and as it is said, extremely attractive countess to release. When she finally let him go, he had paid a large ransom and made far-reaching political conditions, which in turn sparked new speculation about his stay. According to legend, the ransom was used to build her widow's seat, the Frauenburg near Frauenberg an der Nahe.
Around 1350, the Grevenburg in Trarbach became the seat of the Counts of Sponheim. In 1558 the Reformation was carried out in all Sponheim places . With the wars after the French Revolution, the county of Sponheim disappeared. In the Congress of Vienna , Starkenburg was added to the Kingdom of Prussia . Since 1946 the place has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
