geography

The place is on a high plateau between the Sammetbach in the east and the Lieser in the west, in the southern Vulkaneifel . 42.0 percent of the total area of the local community is forested. The closest central center is the district town of Wittlich . Niederöfflingen lies in the transition zone from the moderate maritime climate to the continental climate with usually mild winters and warm summers.

history

The history of Niederöfflingen goes back to 785, when Charlemagne donated the "villa ... Officinus" (Niederöfflingen) to the Echternach Abbey . As early as 1179, the Echternach Abbey renounced its ownership of Niederöfflingen in favor of Archbishop Arnold von Trier . The place was electoral Trier. Niederöfflingen was assigned to the Manderscheid office and was part of the Obermanderscheid Supreme Court.

During the Palatinate War (1688–1697), the soldiers of the Sun King Louis XIV laid down large parts of the Eifel regions in rubble and ashes. With the Peace of Rijswijk in 1697, the Eifel regions were freed from French rule for almost 100 years.

According to the tax lists of 1702, 20 families lived in 18 houses at the beginning of the 18th century. Compared to 1563, the effects of the wars of the 17th century had reduced the number of houses by 6.

In the Revolutionary Wars (1792–1794) the French conquered the Eifel. Following the French model, departments were created as administrative units, which in turn were divided into arrondissements and cantons. On July 30, 1802 the Mairie Niederöfflingen was created, to which the places Niederöfflingen, Gipperath, Greimerath, Hasborn, Ober- and Niederscheidweiler belonged.

In 1814 the French period in the Eifel ended. This was given to Prussia as a result of the Congress of Vienna in 1815.

The municipal ordinances introduced by the French, however, lasted for about 30 years before they were replaced by the Prussian municipal ordinance in 1845. The registry office registers (baptism, marriage and death registers) introduced by Napoleon were also continued by the new administration.

The Niederöfflingen mayor's office , later the Niederöfflingen office, existed until 1934. In that year, the Laufeld and Niederöfflingen offices were dissolved and merged with the Manderscheid office.

With the invasion of the US soldiers in March 1945, the time of the Third Reich in Niederöfflingen came to an end.

Since 1946 the place has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

The last major administrative reform, which was initiated in 1968, led to the incorporation of the place into the Verbandsgemeinde Manderscheid . The Verbandsgemeinde Manderscheid was incorporated into the Verbandsgemeinde Wittlich-Land on July 1, 2014 .

Since the 1970s, a modern multi-purpose community hall has been built as an extension to the old school, three new building areas have been developed, a village square with a fountain has been created and Donatusstrasse has been redesigned and expanded as a through-town.

The church “St. Adrud ”was first mentioned in 1197. A new building of the church “St. Edeltrudis ”was built in 1822, using house stone from the destroyed Himmerod Abbey for windows and doors, as well as a portal. After the completion of the new church building, the parish procured a new high altar in 1826.

In 1956 the baroque altar was restored and “a figure of St. Edeltrudis, a carving from 1500 that was previously in the Edeltrudis Chapel ... “. Extensive renovation work began in the autumn of 1970: a new heating system was installed and a new floor was laid.

The Edeltrudiskapelle stands on the eastern outskirts of Niederöfflingen. A stone figure of St. Willibrord is assigned to the Romanesque period (950 - 1250). In addition to some Gothic figures, a walled-in cross bears the number 1608. The wooden figure of St. Edeltrudis dates from the end of the 15th century. The chapel was built around 1850 next to a well. The spring water, which is said to have healing powers, can be taken from a hand pump next to the sandstone basin.

On February 4, 1945, the chapel in which the Wehrmacht kept their ammunition was completely destroyed by an explosion. The Edeltrudiskapelle, newly built on the same site, was inaugurated on July 25, 1950.
