Location of the local community Ürzig in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich | ||
Ürzig is a municipality on the Middle Moselle in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Bernkastel-Kues .
geography
Geographical location
The municipality is surrounded by vineyards in the large Moselle loop between Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach not far from Trier . Ürzig is located on the left bank of the river, where extremely steep slopes rise to the Eifel ; On the opposite side of the Moselle, the valley widens into a very flat landscape that finally borders the Hunsrück .
Neighboring communities
Neighboring communities are Bausendorf in the north, Kinheim and Erden in the east and Zeltingen-Rachtig in the south and west. The closest medium- sized center is the twin town of Bernkastel-Kues, about nine kilometers away, and the district town of Wittlich, about eight kilometers away . Trier, the largest city in the region, is around 37 kilometers away.
population
The population density is 150 inhabitants per square kilometer. The dialect still spoken in the region is Moselle Franconian , a dialect group of Middle Franconian.
climate
Ürzig lies in the transition zone from the temperate maritime climate to the continental climate ; The climate is very warm and sunny compared to other regions in Germany - in nearby Brauneberg , the record temperature of 41.2 ° C in the shade, the highest air temperature ever recorded in Germany , was recorded on August 11, 1998 .
Due to the Eifel Barrier , Ürzig lies directly in the protection and rain shadow of westerly winds, which can also cause a blow-dryer effect. At the same time, air warming is favored by low air exchange with the surrounding area. Associated with this, due to the constant evaporation of the Moselle water, is a regularly high level of humidity , which, especially in summer, causes sometimes stressful, humid weather and numerous thunderstorms.
history
Settlement remains from the Bronze Age were found in the vicinity . Around 500 BC The Treveri , a Celtic-Germanic mixed people, from whom the Latin name of the city of Trier Augusta Treverorum is derived, settled the region around Trier . Around 50 BC The Romans followed until 500 AD . Viticulture has always been an important branch of the economy; Above all, spiritual wineries, such as the Himmerod Abbey or the Springiersbach Carmelite Monastery , whose courtyards are still preserved, settled in the Moselle village.
Since 1946 the place has been part of the then newly founded state of Rhineland-Palatinate .

Knight families once built three castles, only one of which has survived as a ruin. There is a sundial on the remains of a former watchtower in the vineyards . A baroque monk's courtyard on the promenade served as the backdrop for the Moselbrück television production at the end of the 1980s .
