About this picture
Monzel am Hüttenkopf district
Osann am Rosenberg district

Osann-Monzel on the Moselle is a wine-growing community in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich in Rhineland-Palatinate and consists of the districts Osann and Monzel, which were merged in 1969. The local community belongs to the Wittlich-Land community .

geography

The municipality of Osann-Monzel is located on the Middle Moselle, on a hill one (Monzel) to two (Osann) kilometers from the river. The place is about 180 meters above sea level, between the mountains Hüttenkopf and Rosenberg, in a side valley through which a river loop of the Moselle ran in the Tertiary .

history

The area of Osann-Monzel was probably first settled during Roman times after Julius Caesar (100 BC to 44 BC) incorporated the Eifel and Moselle into the Roman Empire. In the district of Monzel, rubble was found that was interpreted as a Roman villa rustica , i.e. a single agricultural farm. After the end of Roman rule, the municipality belonged to the Franconian Empire from 510 and, after its division, to Lorraine from the middle of the 9th century . Lorraine for its part changed its affiliation several times between the East Franconian and the West Franconian empires. After all, since 925 the community area belonged, albeit with interruptions, to the western border area of Germany .

There are no known documents from this period, but it is assumed that both Osann and Monzel were founded in the 7th or 8th century. What is certain is that these places have existed since at least 950. This is known from a list of properties of the Trier Abbey of St. Martin at this time, in which "osanna" and "muncele villam" are mentioned. This first documentary mention was dated to the year 1008.

Archbishop Balduin von Trier gave Monzel and Osann as fiefs to the Count of Nassau-Saarbrücken in 1323, but Himmerod Monastery also remained an important landlord in Monzel . In 1412 Philipp von Nassau-Saarbrücken gave the Counts of Daun and to Bruch Osann and Monzel as an after fief . From this Osann and Monzel came as marriage property to the Counts of Manderscheid .

From 1794 the two places were under French rule, in 1815 they were assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna . Osann became the seat of the mayor's office in the district of Wittlich . The towns have been part of the then newly founded state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946. On June 7, 1969, the municipalities of Osann and Monzel were dissolved, the new municipality Osann-Monzel was formed from the dissolved municipalities.

This document, which does not contain a date, is estimated to be in the year 1008, while the appendix was probably added around 1020-1040. The appendix is a list of possessions that still belonged to the Trier Abbey of St. Martin around 950 before they were expropriated by the Archbishop of Trier.
