List of grape varieties
Dornfelder

The Dornfelder is an early maturing red wine variety . August Herold received it in 1955 as a new breed at the State Training and Research Institute for Viticulture and Fruit Growing in Weinsberg by crossing the Helfensteiner and Heroldrebe varieties . It is named after the camera administrator Immanuel Dornfeld , the founder of the viticulture school. It was granted plant variety protection and approval by the German Federal Plant Variety Office in 1979 and 1980, respectively, and expired in 2010. Small stands are also known in Switzerland (21 hectares, as of 2018). The variety was selected according to its color intensity and originally grown as a cover wine . As a blending partner of other red grape varieties, it should give the wine made from it more color. More recently, the Dornfelder was but increasingly also segregated expanded and is now in the different levels of quality available. The wine obtained from Dornfelder is generally considered to be harmonious. Various awards, including a. at wine tastings of the German Agricultural Society e. V. (DLG) , indicate that the Dornfelder is sometimes wrongly bearing its reputation for being just a simple red wine .

The Dornfelder is also suitable as a table grape .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

  • The shoot tip is open. She is very hairy.
  • The large leaves are five-lobed and indented to medium depth. The stem bay is closed and widely overlapping. The blade is roughly serrated. The leaf surface (also called blade) is dark green in color.
  • The conical grape is large to very large and has medium density berries. The round berries are large and blue-black in color. The berry is thick-skinned.

The Dornfelder sprouts medium early and is therefore sensitive to possible late spring frosts. Due to its medium maturity, its winter frost hardiness is not very pronounced.

Yield

The output of the Dornfelder is very high. To produce good quality wines consistently yield restriction on the pruning (→'s Vines ) is indispensable.

Expectations

The vines are not very demanding in terms of soil quality. Dornfelder is sensitive to frost, drought and fungal diseases such as downy mildew . Because of the thick berry skin and the loose berries, the Dornfelder is hardly affected by raw rot . The grape variety is susceptible to the cherry vinegar fly ( Drosophila suzukii ).

Wine

The wine from Dornfelder has a black-red color and a fruity taste. The level of acidity (→ acidity (wine) ) is rather moderate, which benefits acid-sensitive consumers. With the high dye content, there is also a high proportion of tannins . Due to its characteristics, it is also suitable for aging in oak barrels ( barrique ).

Due to the demand for intensely colored red wines, the Dornfelder has developed into a fashion variety in Germany. Dornfelder is also increasingly being pressed white and processed into sparkling wine as still wine . Short maceration on the skins produces (often lovely) rosé wines . In the Palatinate, the Dornfelder is also being expanded to become Federroter .

distribution

The majority of the Dornfelder cultivar is in Germany. In other wine-growing countries it is of no importance for cultivation.

The Dornfelder cultivation areas are given in hectares and their share (in%) of the total vineyard area of the respective wine-growing area. As a result, the Dornfelder is particularly popular in the Palatinate and in Rheinhessen, where it grows on over 13% of the vineyards in these wine-growing areas.
