Leaves and grapes of the Heroldrebe grape variety

The Heroldrebe is a somewhat forgotten red wine - grape that can be processed into a fruity, full-bodied yet mild and light rosé (or white autumn ) excellently . It is ideal as a fresh summer wine .

The Heroldrebe is a cross between " Blauer Portugieser " and " Lemberger ". It was bred in 1929 by August Herold , who is also considered the breeder of the grape varieties " Kerner " (1929), " Helfensteiner " (1931) and " Dornfelder " (1955), at the State Teaching and Research Institute for Viticulture and Fruit Growing in Weinsberg . The information provided by the breeder about the parents of the cross has been confirmed by DNA analysis in the meantime. The entry in the list of varieties took place in 1960.

Their late maturity is problematic. The grapes can be harvested with the Pinot Noir. In addition, the variety is sensitive to raw rot . The herald vine is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is self-fruiting.

In the meantime, further breeds have emerged from the Heroldrebe, of which the Dornfelder , a cross with the Helfensteiner , is a great success. The Hegel variety comes from the same parents as the Dornfelder.
