List of varieties

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The variety list is an official directory in which a new plant variety is entered after it has passed the variety test . This means that the seeds of this variety are recognized, have variety approval and can be sold.

Germany

In Germany, the list of varieties is kept by the Bundessortenamt .

Austria

In Austria, the Austrian list of varieties of agricultural plant and vegetable species is valid according to the Saatgutgesetz SaatG 1997, as amended, which the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) or the Federal Office for Food Safety maintains as the Austrian Descriptive List of Varieties on behalf of the Ministry of Life .

Switzerland

The Swiss National Catalog of Varieties is established by the Federal Department of Economic Affairs (FDEA) and prescribed by the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG).

EU variety catalog

Since 1972 there has been a common catalog of varieties of the EU member states of agricultural plant species and vegetable species; it contains more than 10,000 vegetable varieties and more than 5,000 agricultural plant species and consists of varieties from the national variety lists of the member states. Various EU specialist bodies decide which varieties are to be included in the joint catalog. A variety that has been included in this EU variety catalog enjoys " freedom of movement " in the member states. The catalog is maintained by the Community Plant Variety Office (CVPO).

In mid-2012, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that farms in Europe were allowed to produce and market seeds themselves from old, officially not approved plant varieties: i.e. those that are not approved according to the European Union's Seed Directive and are listed in the EU variety catalog. Restrictions are, for example, national regulations on genetically modified organisms .

International

The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants is called Union internationale pour la protection des obtentions végétales (UPOV) in French and has its seat in Geneva .
