The Federal Department of Economics, Education and Research EAER ( French Département fédéral de l'économie, de la formation et de la recherche DEFR , Italian Dipartimento federale dell'economia, della formazione e della ricerca DEFR , Rhaeto-Romanic ) is one of the seven departments of the Swiss state government. The department is headed by one of the Federal Councilors .
The department's task is to ensure optimal framework conditions for employers and entrepreneurs, for trade, for small and medium-sized enterprises, but also for large multinational companies. The department controls and accompanies the economic policy decisions and their implementation and is intended to support a policy that improves the starting position for Switzerland as a business and research location in global competition .

At the beginning of the state, the department was called the “Commerce and Customs Department”. It has been renamed several times since then. The previous names were:
