Johann Niklaus Schneider-Ammann (born February 18, 1952 as Johann Niklaus Schneider in Sumiswald ; resident in Hasle near Burgdorf ) is a Swiss entrepreneur and politician ( FDP ). He was Federal Councilor from November 1, 2010 to December 31, 2018 . In 2016 he was Federal President . He was head of the Federal Department of Economics, Education and Research (EAER).

Live and act

Schneider-Ammann studied electrical engineering at the ETH Zurich and graduated in 1977 with a diploma. In 1982/83 he obtained a Master of Business Administration at the Insead School in Fontainebleau near Paris. In 1978 he became project manager at Oerlikon-Bührle , and in 1981 he joined the mechanical engineering company of his wife Katharina Schneider-Ammann's family, initially as an authorized signatory, and since 1990 as President of the Ammann Group . Since the Ammann Group's participation in the restructuring of the Mikron Technology Group in 2003, he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors , of which he had previously been a member. Since 1998 he has also been a member of the Board of Directors of the Swatch Group in the ultimate parent company The Swatch Group SA .

In addition, there were other board memberships, namely in Ammobilien AG ( Langenthal ), in Belenos Clean Power Holding AG ( Biel ), in Glas Trösch Holding AG ( Bützberg ), in Insys Industriesysteme AG ( Münsingen ), in Madisa AG ( Bern ) , and at Mikron Holding AG (Biel).

Since 1999 Schneider-Ammann has also presided over the Swiss machine, electrical and metal industry association Swissmem ; he was also vice-president of the economic umbrella association Economiesuisse . He was also involved in the Association of Swiss Entrepreneurs in Germany (VSUD) and in the Economic Society of the Canton of Bern .

Schneider-Ammann was elected to the National Council in the 1999 elections and confirmed in those of 2003 and 2007 . There he belonged to the parliamentary commission for economics and taxes (WAK). Johann Schneider-Ammann was elected to the Federal Council on September 22, 2010 in the replacement election for Hans-Rudolf Merz with 144 votes in the fifth ballot. On September 27, 2010, he was assigned the Federal Department of Economic Affairs (FDEA), which had previously been headed by Federal Councilor Doris Leuthard . In 2016 he was Federal President. On September 25, 2018, Schneider-Ammann announced his resignation as of December 31 of the same year.

In 2017 and 2018 Schneider-Ammann took part in the Bilderberg Conference .

Schneider-Ammann is married, has two children and lives in Langenthal. He was a colonel in the General Staff of the Swiss Army. Langenthal granted him honorary citizenship in 2010 and Affoltern im Emmental in 2012 .
