Life

Sabah al-Ahmad was the fourth son of the Emir Ahmad al-Jabir as-Sabah, who died in 1950 .

Sabah al-Ahmad took over his first function in the civil service in 1955 as head of the press and public relations office. In 1962 he became Minister of Information, the following year Foreign Minister. He remained in this post until April 20, 1991. At the same time, he served as Deputy Prime Minister from February 16, 1978 and again as Minister of Information from February 9, 1982. On October 18, 1992, he was again foreign minister before he was appointed prime minister on July 13, 2003 by Emir Jabir al-Ahmad al-Jabir al-Sabah .

In January 2006 the National Assembly elected Sabah al-Ahmad as emir. In 2012 he dissolved parliament and one MP was jailed for two years for lese majesty .

Under his leadership, Kuwait has acted as a mediator in the Qatar crisis since 2017 . As a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council , Kuwait also mediated in other conflicts such as the military intervention in Yemen since 2015 and between Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Contrary to a custom that has existed since 1921 between the al-Jabir and al-Salim branches of the dynasty, Sabah al-Ahmad has appointed his half-brother Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jābir al-Sabāh as his successor.
