A museum harbor is a collection of traditional work ships .

The term museum can be interpreted in a somewhat misleading way, as the ships in the harbors can usually only be viewed from the outside and, due to renovations, do not correspond to certain museum ideas.

The German museum harbors are now home to around 300 ships . The majority of the ships are privately owned and are kept in an authentic state by the owners, largely through their own efforts , which documents an era in the history of the vehicle. The ships are also mainly used for private purposes, but in some cases the interested public is given the opportunity to experience and practice traditional forms of seamanship for themselves. The museum harbors provide the appropriate framework for the presentation of historical vehicles and support their members not only by offering suitable berths, but also by providing professional, sometimes even financial, but definitely non-material support. This makes the museum harbors the important link between the owners of traditional ships and the increasing public interest in historical watercraft of all kinds. Some museum harbors now also have their own ships that are maintained and operated by the members.

As the umbrella organization of the museum ports, the working group is the point of contact for professional associations, authorities and generally interested fellow citizens, with reference to the respective member ports in specific matters.

In the Joint Commission for Historic Watercraft GSHW the AGDM represents the numerically largest group of privately owned ships, most of which do not exceed a length of 25 meters. The GSHW is the recognized German institution on a national and international level when it comes to the concerns of traditional shipping.
